J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Brown sugar sweet aroma with a white head. A dry, grassy bitterness with alcohol ingering. Dates, raisins, caramel, fruits and a beautiful smooth and complex malt backbone. The roasted and smokey flavors well balanced, not too sharp nor buried by other characteristics. Very smooth, silky mouthfeel. Great balance.

best... scotch...ale.... ever. Aroma is subtle which is to be expected, but gets a bit more forward once it warms up. Flavor is exploding with complexity. No bitterness. Very little alcohol presence, which is amazing. Just all around a great tasting very strong scotch ale.

Poured deep blood red with a wonderful soft head that dissipated to a pillowy film and left intricate lacing all the way down. Ripe dark fruit aromas, mostly figs and dark cherries, with some spiciness and alcohol. Rich malty flavors of ripe fruit and caramel accompanied by a great warming alcohol presence. Bready maltiness and some smokiness also make themselves known. Clear peat notes are prominent and make it obvious that this is another special contribution to civilization from the Scots. Great stuff.

Crushed with theDude. Pours a dark brownish color with a big old rocky, off whit head. Aroma is sweet, with caramel and brown sugar, a bit of smoke. Flavor has a bit of scotch in the beginning, with lots of dark fruits coming through. Finish is a bit of hops and caramelized sugar. Awesome beer.;

So here it is the holy grail for maltheads like myself. 22oz bottle courtesy of my buddy from Cali. Pours a gorgeous mahogany color with a big beige head that lasts a long time. Nose is deeply rich with huge notes of chocolate and caramel and underpinings of toffee. There is also a light citrus note that must come from the hops needed to balance this monstrosity of malt. On first sip I was a little disappointed. Strong flavors of chocolate and caramel come through but pass quickly and then a nice hop bite kicks in followed by a strong alcohol burn and a lingering bready biscuityness with hints of smoke. This is much more complex than most scotch ales but I don’t quite find it as enjoyable to drink. Its strange because although this will get a much higher rating from me than the Bellhaven Wee Heavy, I much prefer the Bellhaven for drinking pleasure. This is a brew to be appreciated though, quite an achievement and much deserving of its praise.

Champagne magnum. 2005 Vintage. Pours a deep viscous mahogany with no head. Multi-layered candied sugar nose with a heavy dose of burnt caramel. Flavor shows notes of slightly burnt malt, smoked peat, candied raisins and hints of vanilla. Body has an impresse depth with a minimal level of carbonation and a rich, syrupy texture. The alcohol is well hidden and the finish is smooth with a lingering note of burnt sugar.

2005 Bottle courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Pours a dark brown to black, murky, somewhat syrupy looking with a nice one finger tan head that settles quickly. Aroma is pleasant and intoxicating with notes of ripe dark fruit, toffee, caramel, light roast, hints of earthiness and slightly boozy. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of ripe dark fruit, toffee, roast, caramel, brown sugar, hints of butterscotch and smoke. Generally medium body with a pleasing malty and boozy finish.
