J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Draught: I had a sample of this at the brewery. It poured a somewhat mahogany brown color. A decent off-white head. I get the aroma of caramel malt sweetness, with a hint of peat and smokiness. There are similar notes to the taste. A full, rich, complex taste. Lovely.

750 ml capped bottle, 2003. Dark brandy pour, root beer in the glass with light off-white foam. Rich, hazelnut-perfume-peaty nose, with swirls and eddies of vanilla, brandy and butterscotch making brief but happy appearances. Wonderfully satiny mouthfeel, again slightly (brown ale) nutty on the tongue. Alcohol present but warming rather than abrasive...cappucino liqeuer qualities...the nose becomes truly intoxicating near room temperature. My new favorite from this brewer; I’m beginning at last to understand the praise.

Dark mahogany color with a very thin light tan head that dissipated quickly. The aroma is luxurious malt, smoke, rum and butterscotch. Rich body with full flavors of smoked malt, floral hops, caramel, chocolate and roasted nuts. Amazing. The finish is creamy and smooth, with sweet malt and an alcohol pop. Right up there with any of the best Scotch Ales out there.

Rerate- 4-9-04- I don't know if I didn't like scotch ales before, or if the 2004 version is a different recipe, but this beer is awesome. Pours a deep brown with a wonderful off-white head and beautiful lacing. Smooth with a nice smokiness like a good scotch. I may have to age one to see how well it ages. Too bad alesmith doesn't oak age some of this beer. 7-27-02- Probably my least favorite Alesmith brew so far. Not a brew I will get again, yet it something that needs to be tried once. Their are more flavors of Caramel and alcohol than chocolate and molasses.

Re-rate 3/29/04 2001 bottle: Aged magnificently. Plenty of sweet complex caramel malt flavor and great balance of peat and hops, with a touch of chocolate toward the finish. Semi-dry, mildly oxidized conclusion to a taste bud jubilee. This is a wonderfully brewed Scottish ale!

5/4/2003: 2001 version, Pours a dark murky brown with a full creamy laced head. Thick, complex, caramel and peat malty aroma with good hop balance and some dark fruits. Smooth, sweet full-bodied ale finishes crisp, dry, and almost chocolatey. Alcohol is evident but pretty well hidden. A wonderful Scotch ale.

2001 bottle. Poured with a medium off white head initially which diminished quickly to a very thin lasting head. Color is dark caramel brown. Aroma is very malty. Taste is malty as well with a slight smokiness and flavor of raisins and dates. Mildly alcoholic finish. Thanks to TAR. An excellent brew.

Chocolate and raisns in the nose and a fluffy tan head. Smooth malty chocolate, plum, dried fruits. Long finish with a little saltiness 4.1 rerate Noticed more coffe and malt in the nose. Vanilla, whisky, traces of alcohol, caramel, toffee. Well balanced with sweet cream and dry coffee. A lot less fruity from the tap.

Wow still finding notes from SD. Had this one at the Liars Club. A good malty and nutty aroma. This one was super thick and had a heavy alcohol presence. There were some dark fruits and caramel present in the flavor. A slow sipper indeed but a good one to have a pint of. Id like to try it again.
