Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Lakewood, Oh. - Rozi’s Fine Wines - 750 ml bottle. Dark Ruby red to dark brown pour with an ever present mocha colored pour. Delectably sweet aroma with hints of toffee, chocolate and some dates. Chewy flavor with chocolate, toffee, horehound candy, root beer and some baked brown bread. Back end of raisins, figs and dates - a proverbial flavor fest. Thick. sticky mouthfeel - sticks to your ribs. Overall an excellent entry from AleSmith.

This is a glass of wonderful. Dancing delightfully down the glass is a river of rusty red brown with tan edges. A thick drive-thru vanilla shake beige head bursts, brimming of tiny bubbles. Smooth, yet sturdy and proud. It begins with a wonderful spiced apple pie sweetness that lulls you into a sense of security, then it creeps up and knocks you out with a perfectly balanced alcohol-hops dance that is maddening. This is astounding. Great job guys. I can only hope for more of this. (2001 vintage)

Medium reddish brown color. Head is small. Aroma is very malty and slightly smoky. Nice beer. Malts are peaty, smoky and very smooth. Very well balanced. Nice wee heavy. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. The 9% alcohol is not very noticeable. NICE wee heavy.

Wow..what else can I say than wow. This is an amazing beer, and scotch ale isn’t even a style I’ve ever been interested. Well Alesmith has made an awesome beer that is full bodied, loaded with flavor, and is a great beer to drink. This is a must try if you can get your hands on it

Bottle. Dark brown with very little head, kind of looks like Coke. Sweet, malty aroma with lots of caramel, molasses and a hint of smokiness. Mildly sweet flavor of toasted malts, caramel and smoke. Dries a bit on the finish with a touch of hops. This is my fourth Alesmith beer and none have gotten under a 4.1 rating. I just wish they were available on the east coast.

Re-rate Nov 28, ’04. Deep brown wth a hint of red. Thick pour, little head. Rich aroma, smokey, earthy, some raisny tones, sweet malt, some alcohol. Rich, velvety feel...very very nice. Chocolate and sweet coffee flavors with a little bitter hop character. Some alcohol burn. Wonderful finish.

Bottle, pours dark brown, almost almost black color with a light tan head. Aroma of raisins, rum, wood, whiskey, dough and caramel. Mildly smokey too, but just a subtle hint. I’m glad I’m not the only person who occasionally caught hints of cookies in this! Taste of light roast, chocolate, caramel, toffee, and some more ever so light smoke flavor. Finishes with some raisins, the reappearnce of cookie dough, wonderful earthy hop flavor, mild toast. Caramel, raisin and earth aftertaste. Thick texture, but still very drinkable, and the carbonation was pretty much right (ie: not really a noticable factor, which is good). Very good stuff, one of the top scotch ales I’ve had, if not the best.

This is a pretty much perfect version of a scotch ale. Lots of malt, that toasty roasty aroma and flavor... it’s just really well done. I’m really enjoying all the malt - lots of fruit - plum, apple, maybe some licorice... this whole toasty smoke overtone is really working well. The alcohol is barely noticeable in the flavor. It’s really smooth. All in all I’m impressed.
