J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Absolutely fabulous. Malty with deep smoky flavors. Caramel, toffee, subtle chocolate notes. Surprisingly balanced. A must try.

Aroma of chocolate, smoke, caramel malt, and some alcohol. Sweet malts, chocolate and caramel, very warming alcohol presence. Sticky chewy mouthfeel.

Bottle pours dark brown with ruby hightlights.   Medium tannish colored head, good lacing.   Much darker than other Scottish Ales.   Lovely aroma of figs, plums, oak, and a bit of alcohol as it warms.   Flavor is intense, a large bouquet if you will: figs, plums, oak, dark cherries, molasses, some licorice and cola.   This Scottish is hands down the most flavorful and complex one I've had.   Finish is much same but with perhaps a bit of a vinous/vinegary tinge, mouthfeel is silky smooth.   Warming finish, but the 9.5% is dangerously well hidden.   By far the best Scottish Ale I have had to date.   HIGHLY recommended.   Thanks goes out to TChrome for the trade!

Almost opaque deep brown. Honest light brown head becomes a ring. Big malty aroma, no compromise. You can feel it in your bones that this is a scotch ale, caramel and toffee in abundance. Almost smoky at times. Close to flowery hops. Terrific blending and mutual flavor completion. Just a light alcohol hint in mid-mouth. In mouth, simply put, the beer tastes good. It has everything you wish your scotch ale to have while never being too sweet thanks to a generous (but restrained) hop profile, somehow grassy. Hints of candy, cream, coffee, chocolate. Fantastic creamy mouthfeel, rocking smoothness, this is an easy 5 for texture with so soft carbonation... Awesome, even with just a few months of age. Cheers rodolito! </br> Resample: Same 2004 vintage, but wondering if it's the same batch. This bottle tastes alcohol a lot, is much more vinous, brandy-liqueur like with tartish grapes notes, far less complex and a disappointment. I'd give this 3.7-3.8. Lowering the score to 4.3 from 9/4/10/5/18=4.6

On tap at the brewery: Reddish brown in colour with a nice head and lacing. Aroma is malty, toasted grains, molasses, and a touch of smoke. Flavour is complex, rich and malty with the alcohol comming through in the finish. My new favorite Scotch Ale.

Reddish purple with a thick beige head. Aroma like chocolate pie with a dash of chili powder. has strong raisins and chocolate flavors. Lots of nutiness and tobacco flavors. This is like a beer reduction sauce. Fantastic.

I’m really becoming a fan of these scotch/scottish ales. This one poured with only a small hint of a head with only a tad bit of lacing cliniging to the sides of the glass. The nose has a mess of chocolate with some other sweet notes and an obvious finish of roasty/smokey meatyness. This palate on this is oh so smooth and silky. Very sweet and thick it is almost cnady-like. Lots of sweet matly flavours that provide tastes of rich chocolate and toffee or caramel. There is a fantastic finish of light smoke that drys only slightly. Very well done, Alesmith.

Bottle. Dark brown with very little head, kind of looks like Coke. Sweet, malty aroma with lots of caramel, molasses and a hint of smokiness. Mildly sweet flavor of toasted malts, caramel and smoke. Dries a bit on the finish with a touch of hops. This is my fourth Alesmith beer and none have gotten under a 4.1 rating. I just wish they were available on the east coast.
