Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Re-rate, 12/09, 2yr old bottle - wow, a complete train wreck after aging, just like the Grand Cru and the Weizenbock, don’t let AS age beyond a year! Total English Style Barleywine / Old Ale at this point, maple, brown sugar, molasses, raisins, ick. All bad. Please, no more old AS bottles, please! Leaving the ratings the same, per fresh bottles, but there is no excuse for beer gone this bad! Re-rate, 3/07: Same appearance, aroma was caramel, coffee, and chocolate, some doughy-ness. light grass. The flavor was much the same, some faint peat smoke in the flavor along with a light presence of dark fruits. Mouthfeel was smooth. Within style, I’m not convinced this beats out Bellhaven anymore, but it was nice. The smoke is so faint, that this comes off more like a doppelbock than a scottish ale, imo. Original rating: This beats out the Bellhaven in my book. Poured a nice dark brown with reddish-mahoganey tints and hues. The aroma was the most complex I’ve ever whiffed within the style. Lots of liquor type aromas mixed in with coffee (Kahlua-like) and some dark fruit type scents. Flavor is much the same with a thin mouthfeel and a definite alcohol presence. A vinous aftertaste, this one was good stuff. A tingling of hops in the finish.

750 ml. bottle. Rich, deep browiish red coloring. Inviting brown 1" head. Malty sweet, smoky, licorice-like scent. Similar notes in taste, but with deeper chocolate, molasses flavoring. Body is moderate but not empty and the flavor washes front to back and through the nostrils simultaneously. Some light hops but no sign of bitterness.

Bottle at the Bishops Arms, Malmo, 18th May 09, shared with Tobias & Johan from DDM - cheers guys! Dark brown, small white head. Fruity, malty, superbly balanced. Very enjoyable taste and a perfect palate. Chocolate, fruits. Difficult to break down into components and analyse, but in totality, an awesome beer. The word ’voluptuous’ leaps out from that commercial description!

The most chocolate-forward brew I’ve tasted. Pours to a burgundy/bourbon shade of dark brown topped with extra-shot latte froth. Aromas of nougat, godiva, medium roasted coffee and cranberries. Similarly, tastes of toffee, dense mayan chocolate and irish cream. Whiskeyish flavors arrive eventually but not in an alcoholic kind of way, as the alcohol is almost undetectable. Thick and sensual in the mouth but perfectly subtle.

Bottle from HiTime; poured a ruby tinted brown; with a large off white head. Aroma is sweet, earthy, smoky; hints of dark fruit and yeast. Very good mouthfeel; creamy and a bit chewy. Alcohol was completely hidden for me. Flavor was complex, yet subtle. Main flavor of caramel malt, peat and some smokiness; some sweetness, chocolate and hops as well. An amazing version of the style.

Bottle from Julios in Mass. Sampled with Dennis Bell. Nice deep brown pour with mild off white head. Right away you can see this is a thick beer. Sweet brown sugar/ malt aroma captivates you and makes you beg for that first sip. The mouthful is thick and a mild smokey taste followed by roast and maybe hints of chocolate can be detected. Blended really well. Really really good. Dennis and I both did the cerimonial humping of the bottle.

Pours dark with a red tint. Small tan head that is gone in an instant. Aromas of Roasted Malts and hints of smoke. Coffee and bitter chocolate coat the mouth. A huge beer with a velvety smooth finish. AleSmith brews another gem.

From bottle. Poured a beautiful dark mahogany. Creamy tan head. Aroma was smokey and creamy. Flavor was WOW. Truly. Soft and sweet up front with hints of caramel and roasted malts. And as you sat and sipped it, the hops and slight bitterness came out. This was a very well blended ale. I have no idea why I have waited so long to drink this, and this will definitely be a staple now in my cellar. We enjoyed this while sitting outside with friends watching a bonfire and it was the perfect fit for that. Even our non craft beer drinking friend enjoyed this.
