J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Tap @ Alesmith. Dark burgundy color with a medium eggshell colored head. Smells intensely of ripe fruit, alcohol, cognac, and roasted nuts. Tastes like a port - full of ripe fruit, alcohol, figs, plums, with some roasty notes of chocolate and carmelized sugar. Full bodied, thick beer.

Thanks to beerhandy for sharing this. Poured a dark redish brown color with a medium head. Sweet malty aroma with the alcohol present in the aroma. This one knocked me off my feet with the flavor of sweet malt and alcohol but the alcohol was not overpowering. Very Full mouthfeel with medium carbonation. My first scotch ale and I Like it!! I will definitely be trying more examples of this style.

Draft at Alesmith, early Dec 05. Coppery brown pour, with mod tan head. Huge scotch malty aroma, toffee and some molasses, touch of smoke. Big caramel malty flavors - smoke and toffee, some dark fruit like prune perhaps. I usually am not a fan of Scotch ales, but I was blown away by this beer - especially the flavors. I hope the bottles of it I aquired after the sampling will be as good as the draft tasting. Very well done.

Absolutely beautiful pour brown, red and hints of orange on the edges with a thick lastin head. Obviously very malty aroma with an oh so slightly bitter astringency hop smell as well. KInd of like a candy bar in the mouth, not overly sweet at all, very earthy and yet smooth as can be. Really just a very complex malt body, caramel, roast, earth, and smoke. Truly a meal in a bottle.

Dark brown with a small, dense, tan head. Nose of rich, roasty malt, smoke, peat, earth, sweetness, and subtle alcohol. Flavor adds caramel/toffee, pine trees (the whole tree),and some almost doughy yeast. Full, smooth, soft palate. Excellent. Who’s got my barrel aged bottle?

Bottle (75 cl) from Ölbutikken, Copenhagen, Denmark. Shady mahogny with a rich creamy beige head. Rich malty aroma, with dark chocolate, dark fruits, plums, and unfortunately a touch of alcohol. Full bodied with very soft carbonation. Very well balanced, dry with moderate bitterness. Long chocolatey aftertaste. Would have preffered the alcohol to be tuned down a bit.

Dark ruby body with a medium off-white head. That is indeed one heavy beer. Plenty of thick toffee and caramel. More fruity than usual for a scotch ale with raisin, plums, etc. Pleasantly not too sweet considering the style and abv. Thick creamy body with appropriate medium carbonation. 9.5% is apparent. Unfortunately hard to come by where I live. Too bad cause I can imagine myself drinking that stuff until the Wee Heavy makes me wee-wee heavily.
