Huge aroma features chocolate malt and dark sweet fruits. Color is dark ruby/brown with a thumb thick, creamy tan head. Molasses comes through first in the flavor then in quick procession there are wallops of dates, chocolate and caramel malts, stiff alcohol, raisins and dried plums and hints of caramelized sugar. AleSmith always impresses me by how well they go big without sacrificing complexity. This beer is big and bold and yet it is still subtle promising different flavor arrangements with every sip. A fantastic beer. Jan Primus (160), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Thanks to Marc for this beer.
This is the first beer for which I ever traded. Not sure of the vintage, but I believe it’s at least a year old. Poured dark brown with ruby highlites with a small creamy light-tan head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, cherries, wood. Interestingly, this is the first scotch ale I’ve had that has a nose somewhat reminiscent of scotch. Taste is mildy sweet caramel, molasses, touch of piney hops... has a dry evanescent whiskey character, which, according to the bottle, is to be expected of an older vintage. Very pleasant and complex flavor. Body is slick and moderately carbonated. Surprisingly elegant for the style. I’d be interested in trying a fresher vintage. Aroma is very malty and rich, with nice smokey notes. Palate is slitghly thin but still the flavor is so mouthfilling, smokey and delectable that it’s hardly a complaint. 10% alcohol is not noticed at all. An exquisite beer. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 10, 2006 dark brown mohagany in color, smallish head with a white hue. wood, sweet smokey malts, molasses, scotch, cocoa dominate the aroma. flavor is initially very sweet with a lot of chocolate, a full body, and with a tinge of smokieness. The balance in this beer is just wonderful. None of the flavors dominate the others and it leaves a very pleasent taste on my tongue. Alcomohol is definitely present but not overwhelming either. Thick and chewy and oh so delectable. Havent found an alesmith i havent liked. Looking forwad to trying the rest of the fleet.
