J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Wow! Beautiful ruby color with a tan head. Sweet malt, toffee, nutty and smokey aromas. Sweet malt, toffee, hazelnut flavors with a smokey chocolate finish. Very thick, smooth feel with the perfect amount of carbonation. One amazing beer!

Well, it’s my highest rating ever, and at $13 a bottle, it better be. Hints of raisin, molasses, a warm winter blanket... mmmm. Visceral, beautiful, tasty. Need I say more?

Tap @ brewery. Ruby color with a tan head and lots of lace. Aroma is malty-caramel, with yeast, roastiness and alcohol blended beautifully. Body is medium with light foamy carb and DRY! (underlined, in caps, w/!). That’s DRY!, damnit. Malt: dark fruits with prune, alcohol, light sugar, roasted malt, grapefruit rind and a chocolate finish. Not like any scotch ale I’ve had. Peter says he doesn’t use the yeast you’re "supposed" to use and I think that made a difference. This stuff is awesome on the tap or out of the bottle. Bottled it was fruity, lightly roasty and smoothe, most drinkable warmed up a little from the fridge, but not at room temp. Delicious!

Black in color with deep, ruby highlights and a dense, dark tan head. Deep, rich, concentrated (scorched) caramel malt aroma reminiscent of a vanilla creme-filled milk chocolate candy. Full, creamy body with caramelized malt sugar and that vanilla creme-filled milk chocolate candy flavor and the right amount of balancing alcohol. I’ve had aged beer that tastes like a brownie before but never a chocolate candy bar. Wonderful.

This is a clear and very deep red-brown, medium bodied ale. Wave it under your precostumous and you’ll note it has a rich malty scent. . It’s malty, grainy, and sports a firm roasted taste. It’s an extraordinarily tasty ale. And the more it warms, the richer it gets. A++++++

Great, great, dense creamy lingering lacing head. Caramel color and sweet sweet caramel taste. One of my most favorite beers. A little expensive at $10/705mL, so I waited for a visit to Alesmith’s tasting room to rate this one. Again, excellent!

Rating # 500. Pours a deep and dense mahogany and has a small layer of creamy head. Aroma reminds me of a chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream but also has additions of blended nuts and toffee. The flavor is much more broad and is a rich profile of lightly roast malt, caramel, toffee, and again with the blended mixture of assorted nuts. Has a sweet syrup and coffee like aftertaste finish that makes this a lovely scoth ale to be enjoyed.
