Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

750 ml bottle. Great stuff. Poured dark brown with very little head, and consequently very little lacing. Aromas of caramel, molassas, and other malts. Flavors were greater with chocolate, coffee, and more delicious roastiness. Alcohol flavors as well. Yummy Yummy.

Bottle. Rating no. 1700. Dark reddish brown body with a medium beige head. The aroma is chocolate, hops, barley malt, caramel and tons of toffee. The flavour is lots of dark fruit, dried fruit, toffee, chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Very complex but still balanced. Creamy texture. I could sip this for hours. Great beer.

Pours a dark brown with little to no head. Kind of syrupy looking. Smells of chocolate and caramel like most scotch ales. Taste is pretty sweet with some vanilla and caramel, with hints of chocolate, and a light spiciness to it. Kind of tastes like a tootsie roll. alcohol is prevalant. Very sweet malts and roasted nuts towards the finish. Very nicely done, probably thebest scotch ale Ive ever had.

Bottled. Poured a clear, ruddy garnet with a creamy beige head and rising carbonation.. settled down rather quickly. Vibrant aroma of rich, toasted dark fruits, caramel, toffee, and smoky herbs.. the fruit really shines at room temp & has a rum-spiked feel to it. Smoky dark fruits, drawn, toasted caramel, and semi-sweet chocolate and molassess in the flavor department (the chocolate and molassess really rocked!).. complimentary and warm alcohol presence.. mildly bitter herbs and dark sugars at the finish. Soft carbonation and a very full body.. well-rounded and balanced. Fantastic brew!

Dark mahogany pour with ruby highlights and a big, frothy, off-white head. The aroma is peat smoke and caramel with notes of molasses, dates, and a whiff of alcohol. The flavor adds in some allspice, burnt almond and ends with a nice lingering peat smoke. Creamy full body with soft carbonation.

22 oz bottle on 10/22/06. Deep mahogany under a small light tan head. Roasted grain, caramel, and dark fruity essence in a rich, sweet aroma. Low carboantion and medium/full body with a faint oiliness lead to a rich and satisfying mouthfeel. Dark fruit, roasted grain, brown sugar, and caramel dominate the flavor, although some bitterness comes in at the end to dry it up a bit. This is an outstanding Scotch Ale, simply delicious.
