Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Reviewed from a 2003 750ml bottle. This appears a black color till held up to the light and dark cherry highlights could be seen. A fluffy beige head sits atop the dark body that leaves minimal lace as this was consumed. Fruits scents will the aroma along with slight caramel malt sweetness. There is also a slight smoky note I am picking up from time to time. The flavor has a strong molasses taste with malty sweetness and the alcohol is definitely present. There were notes of chocolate and caramel and it ended with a slight alcohol after taste. Body was almost full with a sticky coating mouthfeel. I had no trouble finishing this big bottle and I would have had more if it were available. A very good example of the style that is worth a shot for sure.

what a good beer. Flavor is malty with hints of caramel and a smack of alcohol that is actually rather pleasant. This beer is really big, and flavorful, you can’t go wrong with it.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a longlasting off-white head. Very malty and slightly fruity hoppy aroma with hints of caramel and dark fruit. Sweetish warming malty caramel flavor with some hoppy hints. Long warming malty caramel finish. Very nice.

Bottle: Pours a dark brown with a big pillowy tan head. Aroma, dark fruits, chocolate, caramel, some alcohol and peaty notes. Flavor, chocolate, roasted notes, caramle, dark fruits, a light smoky hint, with an earthy finish. Very smooth and rich, full bodied. Such a good beer.

25 oz bottle, via fordest, acquired in 2005. Pours a dark ruby hued brown colored body under a small creamy beige head that receded to a thin ring. A slight yeast haze. The nose is deeply malty and sweet. Some notes of smoke, raisins, alcohol, dark fruits, light yeast, and coffee. Flavor is big heavy malt that’s alot less sweet than I expected up front, fading to a smokey, lightly yeasty warming finish. Great well rounded flavor, with dangerously well hidden alcohol. Mouthfeel is just perfect. Thick and heavy but without any cloying stickiness at all. Great light fine carbonation. Amazing how it can feel so soft and yet be so big. Very very good stuff. No one overpowering aspect. Peter Zien... the man’s an artist.

Really nice drink and not as typical as some of the other Scotchs I’ve experienced. Bordered more on a porter than a Scotch for me. Pours an almost opaque black with a slight red hue. Big tan head. Very smooth and malty for the style. Flavors of chocolate and aromas of roasted malt. The aroma gives off a typical scotch cola and crystal sugar element. Creamy texture and full bodied.

The Dan Journal #309. Tasted 10/3/09. 750ml bottle. Filtered with a dark maple amber hue. Webbed off-white head. Aromas of raisins and spices. Nutty and doughy. Very nice nose. Full bodied and sweet and spicy. Sticky. Wonderful complexity. Flavors of raisins and port. Vanilla and graham crackers. Mild caramel note. Good bitter finish. Rolling and complex palate. Very well done! Great drinking!

22 oz bottle on 10/22/06. Deep mahogany under a small light tan head. Roasted grain, caramel, and dark fruity essence in a rich, sweet aroma. Low carboantion and medium/full body with a faint oiliness lead to a rich and satisfying mouthfeel. Dark fruit, roasted grain, brown sugar, and caramel dominate the flavor, although some bitterness comes in at the end to dry it up a bit. This is an outstanding Scotch Ale, simply delicious.
