J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Pours a dark dark brown with a smallish head. Aroma of molasses, chocolate, some smoke. Nice flavor, sweet but the hops are definately there. Nice full mouthfeel, heavy stuff. Guess you were right OG.

From the 750ml bottle is pours a translucent dark brown, amber with a thin, slightly creamy tan head. Nice tight bubbles all around the glass and head. Aroma is very sweet, brown sugar, caramel, chewy candy, some doughy yeast and also a strong, earthy, soil like aroma and maybe just a touch of spice from some the hops. Flavor is sweet and strong, molasses, whiskey, toast, crackers, maple syrup, raisins, caramel candy, and a little bit of peat smoke. Slightly oily on the palate with some heat from the alcohol. Well balanced, complex scotch ale.

2006 bottle that I’ve been holding onto for a cold night - tonight will do. Nice looking plum color with a small head. Aroma has an incredible sugary-fruit sweetness. Lots of chocolate and fig with a bit of candi sugar. Flavor is sweet and fruity with a nice dose of hops at the end. Just like the aroma, only subdued. Nice, smooth mouthfeel. I think this one will taste as good as it smells with a bit more time - the best Wee Heavy/scotch ale I’ve had so far (can’t wait to try my BA bottle!). Another winner from alesmith!

As a preface, I am not very familiar with “scotch style” ales, whatever that actually means. This had a very amazing chocolate and malty smell that only got better as the bottle got lower. The taste was malty and good but not alcoholic despite the high ABV. My friend said he tasted peat and smoke but I tasted no such thing and I feel cheated. This was still a pretty good beer. Damn you Alesmith!!! Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-05-2007 15:33:40

Bottle bought straight from the brewery, drank it later that night. Boy is the alcohol overwhelming with this one. Great medium brown pour with medium head. Aroma was complex with strong spices. Mouthfeel was near perfect. Flavor reminded me of a DB, very earthy but sprinkled with dark fruit. Alcohol is very noticeable on the back-end.

Bomber, shared. Pours a heavy and deep ruby-brown with a large and lacy tan head. Aroma is largely caramel and dark fruit, though I detected molasses, coffee, and slight wood characteristics as well. I was surprised to not find any of the heavy grain characteristic so common in Scotch ales. The flavor is an assault on your senses, with a velvety smooth texture throughout. You get heavy malt, chocolate, and dark fruit on the front, dissolving into hop bitterness at the end. There is a noticeable alcohol burn in the aftertaste, but it doesn’t take away from a powerful and world-class offering.
