Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

I wated a while to buy this because of the price, but I have no trouble buying expensive Belgian beer. I sure am glad I broke down and bought it. Belgian like complexity and in ways flavor. Aroma is almost Kasteel like, just not as sweet smelling. Initial taste is suprising. I was expecting something a little sweeter. Raison, chocolate, mollases come to mind. Very complex. Alittle alcahol in the finish. Very nice and well balanced. Slightly hoppy finish. 2001 bottle. I'm drinking this way too fast. It's so enjoyable. This is truly world class. Rerate 032504: Smokey Oktoberfest like aroma. Dark amber brown. Flavor is wood, smoke, peet, and mollases. Excellent.

Murky Brown Color with Sandy Skin. On the Nose...Light Smoke, Rich Chocolate..Sweet Like a Tootsie Roll. Light Roasts, Vanilla Notes..Overall a Wonderful Aroma. Medium Bodied and Creamy Mouthfeel. Syrupy as Well. Flavor Notes of Molasses, Brown Sugar, Vanilla and Chocolate..Some Light Roasts and a Welcoming Warming from the Alcohol. Very Well Balanced with a Light Dry Aftertaste. First Beer to ’Wow!’ me in a While..Also Helps When its a Style You Highly Enjoy. I Would Stock Large Quantities of This Highly Enjoyable Brew.

Draft at brewery. Pours dark reddish brown with a creamy off-white head that leaves good lacing/ Aroma is sweet and smoky, rich with lots of character. Flavor is malty, peaty and slightly smoky with more of a hop bite than other Scotch ales. Full body and creamy carbonation. Good and good!

Dark brown with purple edges; thin, frothy, tan head. Huge plum, brown sugar, butter cream, butterscotch, earthy, strawberries, smoke, coccoa, cookie, cherries, and nutty aroma. Heavily sweet, moderately acidic. heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter finish. Medium-full body, oily/velvety texture, moderate carbonation, light alcohol. Yes yes yes.

10.31.04 750 bottle @ Heavyweight Openhouse thanks to Eyedrinkale. Clouded mahoganey pour with no head. This stuff is like a malt extract with a hint of smoke. Lots of booze, chocolate, caramel, peat in the background. Maris Otter is evident. Hops be damned. Full and creamy palate spreads the love around. What a treat, I could go for a bottle of my own!

Ruby brown with a nice creamy tan head. Nutty, currant, cherry aroma. Flavors are like the aroma, cherry-currant with prominent bitterness. Full bodied with noticeable alcohol.

Smoky when cold, mellows out and gets really sweet as it warms. I recommend letting the bottle sit out of the fridge 30 minutes before opening. Great big malty beer with barely enough hops to cut the sweetness. This is how I like the malt beverage to treat me. Like eating a 12 inch sub with cookies and milk too.
