J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

2001. Big foamy head. Sweet, malty, chocolatey and cherry taste nicely hides the high alcohol (9%). Nice yeasty finish. Really good stuff from no doubt the best brewer in So Cal.

I can’t really get much aroma out of this. Slight caramel and alcoholic. Flavor is the least smoky and meaty that I’ve had for the style and I like that a lot. Way smooth Lots of caramel and some slight alcohol burn on the back of the throat. A great sipping beer and quite refined. For a bad style this is definitely out of this world.

Chestnut is an apropriate appearance descriptor for this heavyweight. The aroma is of Thanksgiving Day, with all the "fixins". The flavor was a mix of milk, caramel, nutmeg and some peat. The fullness of this beer is remarkable. The ingredients are well blended and all complement each other.

750 ml bottle courtesy of Secret Santa 2006. Pours a grainy dark sandy brown color with a small beige head. Aroma has slightly burnt caramel and toffee as well as dark fruit/dates,roasted malt and hints of faint chocolate and even bourbon !! Flavor is smoky malt and caramel with slight bourbon overtones. Leaves a small tobacco aftertaste. Another excellent concoction from that San Diego brewery. Thanks again Santa !!
