Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Re Rate:Ages very well. Had a bottle weeks ago and never got around to adding it. 2001 edition. Pours a thick tan head that sits on this beatiful mahoganish beer. Smell of toffee, caramel apples, and nutty malts. Looking forward to taste. First sip at little over cellar temp.was just right. Velvety, smooth, rich malts, expand the tastebuds.Little to no no bitterness in finish which I loved about this beer because it gave the malts room to show off.Took me an hour to drink and never once lost flavor.God I love Alesmith.

Many thanks to my super-hot girlfriend for this one! 750mL, purchased in December 2004, 5 months ago. Stored in 1st floor closet. Pours a quite dark brown with a small, creamy head; appears syrupy upon pouring. Initial impression of aroma is too highly alcoholic; letting it breathe a few minutes helps but it is still too heavy on the alcohol; at room temperature after sitting for an hour, the truly wonderful aroma finally begins to eminate: incredibly lush aroma of malts, caramel, oranges, flowers, brown sugar, alcohol, and cookies. Flavor begins to open up at room temperature; up front, there is an alcohol burn throughout this that I love, but it is a little bit overpowering compared to the rest of the flavors; very malty with lots of dark fruit; alcohol throughout; bitter finish. Mouthfeel is thick and slightly sugary syrupy; nice and chewy but a little too sticky. Overall, excellent beer. It seems Alesmith can do no wrong.

Poured a dark, reddish brown, with a light head. Aroma was sweet, and flavor was malty, and lightly sweet, but so smooth. I was impressed with this brew.

Bottle. (No "J.P. Gray’s" on the bottle) Thanks goes to jsquire.
Dark ruby with almost no head. Aroma rich in dark malts with a fruity note of pineapple and passionfruit. Exiotic. Taste is very malty with chocolate and a hint of port. A slight acidity leaning on cherries, almost, finishes this well made winter warmer.

A bottle that I’ve been saving for about 6-8 months, alcohol unnoticable until I got half way through it. Much better flavor than I was expecting, not too sweet at all, there was plenty of dark fruit, but it was balanced out, maybe by alcohol? Some earth to it.. Damn I wish I tryed this sooner, one of my favorites from Alesmith! Great!
