Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle. A dark brown to black color with an intense ruby glow through the light. Initial serving at 50.2 degress. Minimal to no head on the first pour, but a fine creamy brown head on a more vigorous second pour (quickly laced). Strong and noticeable alcohol in the aroma, wine, oak, toffee, raisins, and burnt caramel are also present. Rich caramel coats the palate, the alcohol warms, and the dark fruits finish strong in the aftertaste. A great palate - creamy, velvet, and smooth.

Nice brown color with a gigantic creamy frothy head, sweet/malty aroma, flavor is carmel-like with a strong alcohol overtone, slighty nutty/toffeeish finish...Big beer! a few minutes later: I'm boosting up the points, much more flavor as it warmed up... re-Rate: Lots of smokey licorice..and a big alcohol presence in the way down the throat..

Bottle RBSG ’07. Malty nose with the promise of higher alcohol. Nice, hazy dark brownish amber. Thin, yellowish tan head. Plenty of flavor. Malty with high alcohol. A man’s beer. Some hop evident too. This was one of my two favorite beers at the 2007 RBSG, the other being Duclaw Devil’s Milk. With the staggering selection of outstanding brews available at the grand tasting, that’s saying something.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. This beer pours a very dark amber color, letting nearly no light pass through. It’s head is large and cream and clings to the side of the glass very nicely. It’s a beautiful beer. It has a velvety feel in the mouth. I can taste butter and caramel. While swallowing the beer becomes very complex and hard to describe but quite delicious. Right as you think the swallow is done and you’re ready to think about the taste it has a nicely packaged suprise jolt of alcohol. All it needed was a red bow!

750 mL capped bottle (late 2004 release, aged 6 months): brilliant purpled-hued garnet with a full, fluffy and thick tan head. Rich, roasted aromatics of smoked birch, alcohol soaked raisins, burnt melon and a slight pinyness, complex and developing overtime as my nose gets accustomed to the initial Earthy shock – it is like lounging in the woods in the summer after a quick downpour and the sun has come back out…a wonderfully malted sugar coats the tongue while the onslaught of piney, roasted bitterness provides a beautiful and flavourful backbone. A chocolaty component (giving way to plums and bitter cherries) comes to the forefront as the liquid warms and develops. A great and complex treat, nice job guys.

Peregrinating into glutinous berries, sojourning amid nutritious date and chocolate marshes, adrift on luscious clouds of maple smoke, I suddenly come upon stacks of muscular hops hidden in a bread factory...This classy tonic dilates the pupils and makes you perceive a fecund hot wine of molasses which conducts scintillating currents of well-being...If the real poet is the one who inspires, this syrupy cream of a wee heavy holds the distinguished mention of being quite the thoughtsmith for me...An authentic, portable oasis...

2001: A medium thick tan head sits atop a beautiful red-brown/mohagony body with lots of lacing hugging the glass. The aroma is slightly sweet and malty with a peaty smokiness and a slight bitterness as well as the slightest bit of alcohol. The flavor is bitter sweet, malty and slightly salty wtih a slight smokiness and notes of alcohol. Full bodied, smooth and slightly warming.

Slightly viscous bronze body with a silky light tan head, delicate carbonation, and a heavy sheet of lace. Fruity malt aroma of raisins and cherries and some light roastiness. Vanilla and molasses elements come to the fore as it warms. Great roasty smoke and chocolate flavor plus some leather and maple syrup. Big malty body. I love this style and this beer in particular. Another stroke of genius from AleSmith. Thanks BigBastard!
