J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Very dark brown color; creamy head. Nice aroma, harmonious, with caramel, roasted barley coffee. Powerful body, sweet, with good mix of caramel, chocolate and roasted malt, dried fruits too; good bitterness. Very good mix and solid brew, excellent.

It has a beautiful brown colour and a long nice head. Aroma of chocolate, charming. Slightly sweet, powerful, vigorous and spicy, well-balanced with a touch of bitterness. The finish is long and slightly bitter.

Re-rate, this is the first bottle of Alesmith that I have purchase in Ohio. Burgundy/brown color, pour with a moderate brown head. Aroma is rich, like prunes, carmel and nuts all mixed together. Flavor is sweet, with some alcohol showing. Finish starts off syrupy and ends slightly dry with some hop bitterness shining through.

Pours almost black with a hint of red and a thick creamy head that lasts. Nose is Molasses, Prunes and raisins. Flavor is smooth, with the dried fruit influences standing out. A slight sugary mid with malty influences, and a subtle bitter finish. Extremely smooth and a bit of a creamy mouthfeel. Great brew.

Fat, complex malt bomb that still come across as extremely well balanced. Fantastic caramelized notes alongside all sorts of deep fruit with a fat, somewhat oily badass body. Really malty, not at all bitter yet never sweet even at 10% ABV, great brew.

Big bottle, gold foil wrapper (dunno if the color changes over the years). Pours dark wood color with a staying coffee-colored head. A classic strong Scotch ale, it’s an exercise in malts. Sweetness from malts and fruit; complexity from undertones of smoke which punch up in the dry finish. Roasted chestnuts. Full-bodied, smooth, chewy. Damn good, but I think I prefer their Old Numbskull (also very malt-focused), though it’s not really fair to compare across styles like that.

Dark red-brown in color with a large, light brown head with great lacing. The aroma is of caramel, chocolate and dark fruits with notes of coffee, oak, and molasses. The flavor is slightly hoppy and chocolatey with a strong alcohol backbone and a coffee undertone. Mostly sweet with a bitter finish. The texture is creamy. A very enjoyable ale with a very complex and aggressive flavor. I LOVE IT!

Bottle @ Blind Tiger. Not sure if there is better way of trying a new genre of beer. This beer is big and fully flavored, full of smoky flavor, malt, slight sugar and chocolate and hop notes, Alcohol is only evident in the slight warming. Nice.
