J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

750ml bottle from the Alesmith brewery tour. smell is fairly simple (relatively) malt, caramel, whiskey. dark ruby pour with a bit of lacing. rich smokey malt taste. mouthfeel is perfect. chocolate smooth (at some point). a fantastic mix of complex and balance. has to be the best scotch ale I’ve ever had. K - 8.5

bottle that has been sitting for a few months poured a brown in color with some red highlights and a dark tan one finger head. aroma has rich dark fruit, raisin, rum, dark brown sugar, brown malt, and some chocolate covered coffee bean. mouth feel is fairly thick with a dark sugar coating and just enough carbonation. flavor is very rich, dark fruit, molasses, cherry, lightly roasted malt, peat, some bourbon soaked wood, and an interesting twang of chocolate. there is some alcohol heat but in a nice warming way. really luxurious and full of rich flavors, by far the best of this style i have tried.

Deep reddish-brown pour with a light tan head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malts, short bread, a hint of smoke and vanilla. The flavor is truly awesome. Tons of caramel throughout, coupled with an early hit of chocolate and roast. This is quickly followed by some mild dark fruit notes. The finish is sweet, but tempered by a very nice (but mild) alcohol warmth. The mouthfeel is awesomely smooth and full. This beer rules. The first scotch ale I’ve really enjoyed.

Pours a dark with white head. Aroma is dark fruits with some woody character and a little bit of chocolate. Flavor is really strong, but comes off well with lots of malty sweetness. Lots of caramel too. Finishes nice and smooth. Delicious.

750 ml bottle. Pours a rich red/brown with a small head. The aroma is sweet and fruity. The flavor is really smooth and reminds me of christmas fruit bread. A ton of flavor. Damnn good.

Crushed with Honkeybra. One hell of a profile with wonderful warmth. Fruity and scotchy on the nose, which leads into awesomeness. Finish is bitter and dry, but the fruits are the real dominant party in this sexy bitch of a brew. Intimidating.

Excellent golden hued mahogany/brown with a persistent creamy head. A lot of dark earthy fruit and sweet malt in the nose. Flavor profile followed suit. Dark fruit, sweet caramel malt with a perfect amount of bitterness in the finish. Easily one of the most full mouthfeels of any beer I’ve had to date. Another great release from Alesmith.
