J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Pours almost black with a hint of red and a thick creamy head that lasts. Nose is Molasses, Prunes and raisins. Flavor is smooth, with the dried fruit influences standing out. A slight sugary mid with malty influences, and a subtle bitter finish. Extremely smooth and a bit of a creamy mouthfeel. Great brew.

Dark red-brown in color with a large, light brown head with great lacing. The aroma is of caramel, chocolate and dark fruits with notes of coffee, oak, and molasses. The flavor is slightly hoppy and chocolatey with a strong alcohol backbone and a coffee undertone. Mostly sweet with a bitter finish. The texture is creamy. A very enjoyable ale with a very complex and aggressive flavor. I LOVE IT!

Excellent golden hued mahogany/brown with a persistent creamy head. A lot of dark earthy fruit and sweet malt in the nose. Flavor profile followed suit. Dark fruit, sweet caramel malt with a perfect amount of bitterness in the finish. Easily one of the most full mouthfeels of any beer I’ve had to date. Another great release from Alesmith.

750 ml bottle from Market of Choice. Poured a deep red-brown with a nice white head and some light lacing. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, peat and some woodiness. Flavor is full of malt and peat, toffee and plum/raisin fruitiness. By leaps and bounds the best scotch/wee heavy it’s ever been my pleasure to drink. Alcohol well masked as well.

Bottle @ Blind Tiger. Not sure if there is better way of trying a new genre of beer. This beer is big and fully flavored, full of smoky flavor, malt, slight sugar and chocolate and hop notes, Alcohol is only evident in the slight warming. Nice.

Pours a dark brown color with just a little white head to it. Has a amazing maltybutterscotch smell to it. Taste is more or less the same as the smell but with a smokey finish to it.

750ml poured into a snifter Pours a murky reddish brown. Pours very fizzy like a cola, but head retains in a tight foam. Aroma is big. Smells like roasted nuts, a little chocolate, and rotten dark fruits. this is my first scotch ale. I didnt feel like drinking tonight, and kind of wanted to hate it, but its pretty damn good. Very smooth mouthfeel. Roasty malt, sweet, very sweet, but has a nice bite of alcohol to cut through the sweetness. It’s rather sweet and tough to drink, but this is a fantastic offering. very glad i tried it.
