J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

fruity, hoppy,it is thick and rich. I was suprised by this one, very good,smokey peat, some caramel,malty another good one provided by hopsrus, Thanks

Thanks to tidiaguy for bringing this to When Continents Collide 2! WOW! 2003 vintage. Dark reddish brown. Aroma is alcohol and dark fruit blended with malt and cocoa. Taste was great, as expected. A rich malted and sweet body with very noticeable alcohol notes. VERY smooth, though.Light alcohol during the finish. Great beer!

I had been saving this one from a trade with Tchrome, therefore a big kudos out to Tad for this. Dark brown, cloudy, with a tan head. Big hoppy, fruity, carmel aroma, with an alcohol component. American hops to boot. Flavor is big and sticky sweet, with the roasted barley coming through with the hops and the alcohol. Tasty, and would be worth having a case to enjoy through the winter months...

This dark brown ale poured with a short tan head that lasted a while, eliciting a roasted malt aroma. The flavor is full-bodied with a hint of treacle, initially sweet but with a slightly bitter chalky finish. This is the ultimate example of scotch ale, providing a meal in a bottle.

Whoa - - - This is a BIG load of malt to chew! The body is a dark nutty brown with ruby highlighting. The head is a mere tan film. The slightly smokey aroma is that of rich roasted malt, caramel, cocoa, toffee, raisins... all with a strong alcohol presence. This is chewy, thick, and hot in the mouth. The taste blends flavors of butterscotch, chocolate, roasted barley, caramel, molasses, and dried fruits. Stir it all up, pump in some alcohol and smoke for the finish, and you have one serious Wee Heavy. I need to get ahold of more of this for cellaring... and drinking, of course.

750ml Bottle, 2005. Pours a nice black color with a foamy light tan head. Nose is a malty, chocolate, light roast and nuts. Taste is very malty, quite a bit of chocolate and a nuttiness.Roastiness appears and leads to a nice light alcohol warming. Feels very smooth and pleasant on the palate and finishes with a bitterness to wake you up from the soothing features on the tongue.

750ml bottle that I’ve aged for another 6 months. Dark golden hues complement the dynamic smooth hoppy aroma. Great opening taste of hops and malt with some musty chocolate undertones. Very lively and extremely potent! What a great beer.

Bottle; Nose is light with some roastiness, nutiness, and some caramel; clear transparent brown with a big, longlasting tan head; flavor of smokychocolate, plums, raisins, and a little alcohol in the medium body; the finish is some mild hop bitterness and some alcohol.
