J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Far and away the best scotch ale I’ve had. Caramel, toffee, nuts, a hint of chocolate. A nice hop kick in the finish to complement the well hidden alcohol. I’ve never been a huge fun of Scotch ales, but I could drink this on a regular basis. Now only if I could find it somewhere. Thank you hopsrus.

Looks like a good brown porter with the black appearance but far from blocking all light. Nice malt character. Chocolate with some coffee and it seems that there’s some peat in the flavor. The alcohol is prominant in the finish. Head sticks around for the long haul.

Dark brown and cloudy in color with a nice tan head. Hoppy, dark fruity, caramel aroma. Fig, plums and roasty notes. Big flavor. Very good beer. Very malty flavor. Finish is fruity. Chewy. Full bodied. Very drinkable.

Bottle. Poured a small creamy, smooth tan head that most diminished, fine-large sized bubbles, minimal carbonation, good lacing, and a reddish brown hue. Aroma was wonderful-malty, chocolate, little smokey, sweet, and alcohol. The flavor was sweet, malty, chocolate, vinuous but not overly so, rich, smokey, caramel and a lingering aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel. Medium-full body. A very quaffable Scotch Ale and well worth trying.

without a doubt one of the better scottch ales available. a dark brown pour with some light showing through on the edges. not much of a head as I’m sure the high alcohol has a part in that. wonderful scottch aroma and flavor. good stuff! thanks Sean.

I love Scotch Ale you know big malty brews with little to no hops just rich caramel malts and huge alcohol content. Commercially they are hard to find the scottish examples are weak and watery .Homebrewing is about the only way to get a decent one .or you could get some Alesmith because they know Scotch Ale

This deserves to be the highest rated scotch ale (of which I’m not usually a fan). Had it on tap at thier brewery. Just imagine the best scotch ale you think is possible. Alcohol is kicking and it is sweet and heavy on the malt.

Deep mahagony, red highlights, with a great head of off tan that holds up nicely then fades into sporadic sticky thin lacing around the glass. With good retention overall. Raisin, mollasses, mission fig, black curran, black berry, smoked peat, caramel malt, and hints of woody earth round out the nicely balanced nose. This is a damn good beer. Full and rich mouthfeel leaves a layer of sweet malt on your tongue for the minute long or loner finish. Ripe mission fig, black currant, slight anise, malt is of sweet burnt caramel and is a mid palate wonder. A floral slightly earthy hop is introduced to balance and complete the long finish. Hints of peat smokey-ness are subdued but integrated nicely. Raisin, cured meat, and craft round this one out. A great, very easy too sip on beer.
