Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Once again thanks to hopsrus for a sample of this. Thick malt flavors sit very nicely on the tongue. This is a beer to really wrap yourself around. Quality.

No "J P Gray’s" on the bottle, but I’ve read it’s the same beer. Excellent biscuitty, bready malt aroma. Deep auburn color under a light tan head. Flavor is dominated by the caramel malt, but some peat flavors and chocolate malts poke through as well. The alcohol is slightly more apparent than I had expected, but it’s still a wonderful beer.

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc and tupalev, blankboy’s bottle. Poured murky brown with a small foamy head. Boozy, sweet roast aroma with some fruity/spicy/yeasty character, but the aroma was quite muted, even after warming. Taste of dusty toasted malt, booze, with light spice and yeast and only a hint of peaty earthiness in the alcohol-bitter finish. Slight weak-bodied, and only lightly carbonated, the primary character of this one seemed to be "booze" - it’s nice, but the bar is set very high for me with Alesmith and this one didn’t meet my over-amped expectations; but it’s a high-ABV beer, and I’ve been told by experienced Alesmith fans that this one needs to be aged at least 2 years, so I will put away the 3 bottles that are en-route to me right now and revisit this in 2008. Original rating 6+3+7+4+15 = 3.5 *** Re-rate Feb 6/08 with garthicus. Damn, age turned this mellow - SO much better, the booze is pushed way back, the smooth scotch ale is all you want, lovely smooth mouthfeel - VERY glad I have 3 bottles of this left, another year or so and I may bump again!

Thanks Pete! Pours a rich, dark auburn color with a medium head and lots of lasting lacing. The aroma is absolutely delicious with smoke, chocolate and raisin. The flavor is a mish mash of deliciousness including chocolate, caramel, slight alcohol and smoke. another fantastic alesmith beer!

Bottle courtesy after4ever. It’s a perfect day for an IPA, and this bottle should be aged for a couple more years, but what the hell - I’m not going to encourage him to save the bottle for later. This is a big beer, the aroma starts with my glass still at arms length. Pours a nearly opaque reddish brown with a rocky tan head. The aroma is tootsie rolls, roasty chocolate and prunes. The body is full, lightly syrupy. The taste has the sweet toffee/molasses notes, along dried fruit and a bit of smoke. Nice clean finish.
