J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle at the RBG Low Countries 2005 tasting session
Off-white, clear brown-black body. Nose of straw, molasses, coffee, liquor. Lightly sweet, moderately bitter initial flavour. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter (long) finish. Medium bodied. Soft carbonation. The 9.5% ABV isn’t apparent at all. Very smooth beer and well-balanced. Not a flavour-bomb, which I like in it.

Very malty for sure, with a spicy alcohol finish. The intitial flavor is complex but fades very quickly into the alcohol. All things said, it’s a really good beer.

Aroma of malt, molasses, chocolate, nuts, some smoke. Appears a deep mahogany color with some reddish hues, and with no head whatsoever. Flavor is very smoky at the start, malty in the middle, and very salty in the finish, with hoppy bitterness and even some peppery notes in the aftertaste. Palate is thick, chewy and appropriate. Overall, this beer is very good, and just a bit more than the sum of its parts.

Butterscotch nose with a dark iced tea body with a dense lasting head. Caramel sweetness, husky, honey, very light smoke, brown sugar. Very nice.

25.7oz bought at Alesmith bottled 08/04 - Sticky sweet aroma of caramel and licorice. Dark brown with no head but some lacing. Taste is surprisingly smooth considering the amount of flavor and depth. Deep rich smokey flavor of malts and more malts. A great chilly weather brew.

Pours a deep dark reddish brown...pretty much opaque with a shortmedium tan head that turns to a creamy film. The aroma is pretty big: molasses, grape juice, chocolate, dates, and sweet malt. The flavor also holds a more semi-sweet chocolate, some light smokiness, more sweet malt, and dark fruits...very sweet and savory. Rich over the tounge with a bit of carbonation...a bit flat at times leading to a excellentsmokey/sweet finish with just a touch of coffee like bitterness. This is one big malty beer, although I can’t but to yearn for a bit more smoke/peat in here, but it’s still delicious despite that factor. Perfect for this breezy 74 degree weather day in the shade.

Wow. Tasty. Malt and yeast in aroma. Flavor is sweet malt, slightly nutty, molasses. Finish is bitter and warm. Nice thick sticky body on this one. Great!
