Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Small, light, creamy head. Cloudy dark gold, copper brew. Warm soft alcohol, full nose, good blend -different malts and chocolate. Medium bodied ale, smooth brew. Alcohol at front slightly ruins the image, bitter finish saves the day. Still very nice, I have to respect the top craftsmanship.

Magnum via Stefanje the Generous. Pours a deep ruby with hints of sienna. A thick tan clingy head stays put on top of this lovely brew and makes you stick your nose into it while quaffing this malty thick beer. Nose while being malty also has whisky mash tones that make one think of the highland mountains. Body is not as full as I thought it was going to be. It is a creamy carmel. My head is spinng halfway thru this bottle. Light whisps and mere suggestions of hops peek at the tounge. Lacing is uneven but pretty.

Malt, malt, and more malt. This is one malty beer. Enjoyed. Nice mouthfeel. Lots of carbonation and lacing. As mentioned, color was deep brown with some translucency. Aroms and flavor was - surprise - malt. It’s not my favorite style but overall a good brew.

Poured from 75cl bottle at Alesmith dinner. Once again, I don’t have much experience with scotch ales but this was fantastic. Based on my experience I can’t really comment on how true to type it was but I really liked it. Yummy!

From bottle poured a deep dark brown body with a wispy tan head. Nutty, sweet, chewy aroma of dark fruits, premier grains, and caramel. Great thick, rich mouthfeel. Finished with appropriate spiciness and a thick rich coat on the tongue.

Pours a dark brown with thin tan head. Nice aroma of caramel malt, nuts, and some dark fruit. Very good flavor, with the malt really dominating. Very smooth and I thought it did a good job hiding the 10%. Very sweet. Nicely done by AleSmith.
