J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle 2009 into mini pint glass. Very dark brown with a nice creamy khaki head. This one is just very solid on the aroma and flavor with lots of roasty malt notes, caramel, a bit of smoke, and some residual sweetness that isn’t overwhelming. A nice toasty winter drinker with a heavy and smooth mouthfeel.

10.03.09 Bottle. Pours brown with tan head. Aroma of malt, maple syrup, dried fruits, slight tartness. Tastes immediately sweet, fruity, maple syrup, slight smoke, malty, alcohol burn.

Botella. Batch 329. Deep dark brown colour with a beige head laving a good lacing. Sweet deep malty dark fruity chocolate aroma. Good mouthfeel. The flavour is sweet with a deep maltiness, dark fruits, alcohol, chocolate and a very pleasant bitterness.

Bottled (thanks stoutlover72). Dark ambery brown colour with mediumsized beigeish brown head. Quite big maltyness along with some toffee and alcohol. Quite strong on the chocolate and nuttynesss as well. Flavour is quite much the same in a very fullbodied way. The alcohol is a bit too strong even though this has been kept since I got it in 2006.

Clear, dark amber with a small, partly lasting head. Neutral-malty aroma with grainy maltiness, a touch of alcohol, and some dried fruit. Neutral flavor with strong maltiness held well in balance, the overall presentation being surprisingly dry for the body. Quite full-bodied with medium carbonation. A big beer, but by no means extreme. Seems a bit overrated here, but it is very tasty.

Bottle. Rating no. 1700. Dark reddish brown body with a medium beige head. The aroma is chocolate, hops, barley malt, caramel and tons of toffee. The flavour is lots of dark fruit, dried fruit, toffee, chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Very complex but still balanced. Creamy texture. I could sip this for hours. Great beer.

Really beautiful dark ruby pour. Alcohol well hidden for the most part until the aftertaste and subsequent warming affect. Two finger airy tan head that faded fast. Aroma - boozy warmed dates. Flavor - a hint of the aroma but boozier.

(Bottle at Pikkulintu) Poured deep dark brown and almost clear with medium sized and white head. Aroma contained malts, treacle and chocolate. Palate was full bodied and quite dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, roastedness, molasses, chocolate, dried plum and bitterness. Aftertaste contained malts and dried plum. Beer showed several features of Scottish ale and still wasn’t one. Still a very good beer.
