Commercial Description:
AleSmith X Extra Pale Ale is a clean, light-colored, light-bodied ale. The People's Choice award winner at the 2000 San Diego Real Ale Festival and the second runner-up in 2001, it has a good dose of dry hops balanced by a gentle sweetness, giving an almost sweet-and-sour effect. Appearance: Light golden color, and a nice white head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with almost tingling flavors of citrus and pine, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness. Aroma: Strong lemony-citrusy character, with sweet malt and pine in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, light-bodied.

Picked up a 22-oz bomber via Liquid Solution. Pours a semi-clear orange amber colored brew with an off-white head and decent lacing. Aroma of citrus and floral hops, grapefruit, caramel malt and some tropical fruit. Taste is slightly carbonated, some lemon zest, caramel and light herbs. Finish is smooth and a mild bitterness. A solid American Pale Ale overall.

Pale amber pour with white head. When you pour it a piney citrus and malt aroma jumps out at you. Flavors of lemon citrus, hops, and a balanced malt flavor. Flavors are not that strong, and the beer is very smooth and drinkable.

22oz bottle. Pours translucent pale orange, capped with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, toffee, grass, and dish soap. Grapefruit hits the palate first, which is joined by white pepper, caramel, grass, and mild herbal notes. Grapefruit lingers on the palate. Medium bodied and very drinkable.

Bomber. Hazy pale topaz with a lasting disc of cream. Nice aroma of caramel, resin and citrus peel. Flavor is caramel, resin and and light grapefruit. Light-medium body is a little too fizzy, watery and dry. Decent session ale.

22 oz. bottle from John’s Market Place. A huge fluffy head that fades away...eventually. Haze yellow/orange appearance. The head is absolutely ridiculous. Nice hop aroma! The sad thin is is that I just had their IPA and this one doesn’t compare. The hops dominate. There is not much of a hop/malt balance here. Nice ctirus hop aroma. The aroma gets better as you let it warm up. The flavor is a different story. This beer has a nice hop profile. Focus is on the hops. I can taste the subtle lemon flavor in the background. Jeez, the head has not faded away yet. Nice citrus taste, but the flavor seems to be affected by the rather mediocre palate. Not saying the palate is bad, but I don’t feel it has the palate to carry the flavors. That lemon flavor is only very subtle. The aroma is much nicer than the actual taste.
