Commercial Description:
AleSmith X Extra Pale Ale is a clean, light-colored, light-bodied ale. The People's Choice award winner at the 2000 San Diego Real Ale Festival and the second runner-up in 2001, it has a good dose of dry hops balanced by a gentle sweetness, giving an almost sweet-and-sour effect. Appearance: Light golden color, and a nice white head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with almost tingling flavors of citrus and pine, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness. Aroma: Strong lemony-citrusy character, with sweet malt and pine in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, light-bodied.

Ok, I admit it, I’m not the hop head and I don’t need deep caramel under my APA’s, just drinkability. This was great for that: refreshing and crisp (except for some light fruitiness). The pour was pale golden color with a nice initial head that laced ok. Aroma was citrus and light floral hops. The flavor was light base malts with some pine but definite grapefruits. Some light fruits / esters mixed in, highlighting the ale-ness of this thing, but I enjoyed it. Very light body, refreshing and drinkable.

Clear, pale brass with an oily potato grease splotch for the head and bubbly rung around the tulip’s edges. Consecutive pours yield a fluffy, white foam head. Aroma is a fandango - nectarines, grapefruit, mandarin, apricots, tropical toffee and C-hop goodness. Refreshing, sweet briskness comes in for the flavor. Crisp, with golden sweet potatoes in its wake. Gentle, smooth papaya, starfruit, sodagum and mute grapefruit rind. Mild bitter-sweetness, medium-bodied and A+ carbonation. Very well balanced with a nice citric caramel substance to fall back on. Finish revels in golden grains, slightly sugary wheat sentiments and calming, refreshing, mild clean hop flavor proclamations. Quite possibly the benchmark for pale ales. Thanks for the bomber, tpkenned!

Thanks to Foolish Mortal for this one! The pour is hazy dark golden with a 2-finger, creamy white head. The aroma is pale malty, fruity, and hopcitric, with the fruits leading the way, including pears, apricots, and applesauce. The flavor is pale malty, very fruity, with some pears, apricots, honey, hops, and black pepper. Medium, very complex and smooth palate. This beer won’t knock your socks off in any particular category, but it adds up to a very good, refreshing, quaffable beer.

Big ass rocky white head, sticky lace all over it, clear blonde color, a real eye catcher. Mild nose of medium sweet malts, light citrusy hops and some honey? Body is light/medium. A mostly malty brew, hmmmm. A light hoppy grassiness, some citrus also. Finish is fairly dry. An easy drinker. Thanks for the bomber Andy!

Small tap sample at the brewery. Golden amber body, lotsa citrus and grapefruit here. A dangerously drinkable and flavorful APA. If I could find this at home, and find it for $3/22oz bottle, I’d have to replace Arrogant Bastard.

Great pale ale. Big, lasting head. Hoppy aroma (more than just cascades), smooth, no aftertaste, and very easy drinking. A pleasure. I prefer this over the Stone any day.

22 oz bomber purchased from Tops Liquors in Tempe, AZ. First thing I notice is the enormous, fizzy white head. Takes forever for it to calm down. Aroma is kind of corny, grainy, with some mild earthy hoppiness and a bit of mild lemons. I must admit that this is less than quaffable. Mildly hazy pale golden color with the aforementioned huge white, frothy head. Bitter and earthy hopped start with lots of active bubbled carbonation present. The middle has a slight sweet toasted flavor with a bit more bitterness to finish. This is ok, and somewhat upsetting from a brewery like Alesmith. Overcarbonated.
