Commercial Description:
AleSmith X Extra Pale Ale is a clean, light-colored, light-bodied ale. The People's Choice award winner at the 2000 San Diego Real Ale Festival and the second runner-up in 2001, it has a good dose of dry hops balanced by a gentle sweetness, giving an almost sweet-and-sour effect. Appearance: Light golden color, and a nice white head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with almost tingling flavors of citrus and pine, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness. Aroma: Strong lemony-citrusy character, with sweet malt and pine in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, light-bodied.

Cloudy golden with a thick white head. Good retention. Aroma was quite floral for a Pale Ale, reminded me more of lager then a Pale Ale. Flavor was hoppy with citrus, graitfruit, lemon and caramel. Overall it really impresses me as a Lager, but it is still really good.

Bottle. This ale pours with a nice head and cloudy gold color. The aroma is sweet and hoppy. It’s medium bodied, and a taste that’s a little dry with sweet hops.

65 cl bottle. Golden colour with a great head. Very light aroma of sweetness from the malt and some caramel too. Very nice hoppy flavour with a lot of fruitness and some maltness. Ends up bitter and dry, really nice endeed.

Bottle Pours a golden hued yellow, with nice fine carbonation and a dispersed frothy off-white head. Aroma of chipotle, light fresh grain bin, and very subtle and gentle grassy hops. Wheaty sweet flavor, without a lot of body and depth, but an extreme level of drinkability. There’s a strong ring of playdough and some peculiar spicy light florals that I can’t put my finger on, but don’t seem to be coming from the hops. I could be wrong. It’s almost a sweet fruity grain character showing through. Smacks of light grass and some green teas, with a tooth of bran. Palate is a grainy dry glow. Thanks Andy!

(Bottle 65 cl) Pours pale amber with a slight haze and a rough, white head with a splendid retention. Lovely, lightly citrusy nose. Medium body with a vague caramelish sweetness. Dry, hoppy and very aromatic finish. 240206

Bottle at Enniskillen’s tasting

Pours a nice gold with a healthy head. Aroma is lemon grass and a faint rice. Flavor is honey, rice, and weak hops. Watery Palate. Despite the sum of its parts, it’s an enjoyable beer. Nice balance of ingredients and alcohol.

Bottle (courtesy of Hogtownharry): Poured a light yellow color ale with a medium bubbly white head with average retention. Aroma of hops if mostly floral with small touch of ester, which was slightly displeasing. Taste is quite refreshing with a strong hops presence. Lighter body then expected but I didn’t mind because APA is a style that doesn’t necessarily gain from full body.

This beer pours an amber gold with a frothy white head that dissipates in to a thick film that lasts and laces the whole way down the beer. The smell hits you initially with the aroma of the hops. First of all the distict floral and citrus flavors that are so common. There is also a hint of some lightly toasted pale malts. The taste is also fantastic. The hops are obviously the focus of the beer but this does not prevent the beer from preventing some delightful sweet and toasted malts. Again the normal floral/citrus hops are most prevalent but once the beer is tasted the citrus flavor seems to dominate. The mouthfeel is carbonated well with some nice thickness. There is also a welcome dimension of bitterness associated with this beer. Overall I really enjoy this one. This is one I will come back to again and again.
