Commercial Description:
AleSmith X Extra Pale Ale is a clean, light-colored, light-bodied ale. The People's Choice award winner at the 2000 San Diego Real Ale Festival and the second runner-up in 2001, it has a good dose of dry hops balanced by a gentle sweetness, giving an almost sweet-and-sour effect. Appearance: Light golden color, and a nice white head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with almost tingling flavors of citrus and pine, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness. Aroma: Strong lemony-citrusy character, with sweet malt and pine in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, light-bodied.

Pours pale golden with thin wispy head. Nose is passionfruit with caramel, hint of floral honey. Taste bitter from the hops, then sharp and lemony in a cleansing way, tho perhaps a bit too sharp. Bitterness lingers in the mouth and becomes more appealing as the lemon sharpness fades into a gentle memory, inviting another sip.

22 oz bottle. Pours gold with a thick head with tons of lacing and lively carbonation. Citrus nose. Flavor is pine, citrus, and a mild sweetness. Light mouthfeel and very refreshing. I can’t recall ever having a below par beer from Ale Smith. Good beer.

Bottled (thanks stoutlover72!). Amber colour, huge white head. Aroma is fruits, some grassyness and mild toffeeishness. Flavour is some slight fruity notes with toffee and some slight earthyness also. Fruity and yeasty aftertaste.

Bottled (a couple of years old bottle, Vasa session). Slightly hazy yellow color, giant head, lots of lace. Citrusy with light mellow mango aroma, some papery-grainy notes. Citrusy, fruity, bready ... some hops in the aftertaste. Long citrusy bitter aftertaste. Toned down after ageing.

I knew I had this beer the last time I was in San Diego but I just couldn’t be sure. Got the bottle in a trade with WeeHeavySD. Pours a clear blond with a thin white head. Citrus hops are the main aroma. Good bitter finish. I still like my Alpha King better for a APA, but this is a fine beer.

If you can imagine a lighter-smoother version of a robust, fine Pale Ale, but sacrifice none of the flavor, depth of character or drinking experience...you’d be left with X. Pours light golden and clear. Flavor is citrus and sweet-malt. Finishes slightly bitter, sweet and very tingly-clean!
