Commercial Description:
YuleSmith is a quenching, hoppy "double" IPA. Appearance: Clear copper color and a creamy beige head with good retention. Flavor: Starts out with a bite of hops, but a perfect balance of maltiness and a dry finish leave you thirsting for that next sip. Aroma: The aroma starts with a heady citrusy and floral feel, and a slight overtone of vanilla. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Warm mouthfeel from the high alcohol content. Feels lush and full in the mouth.

22 oz bottle, imbibed with lust and with MartinT, tiggmtl, Rastacouere and Lubiere in Montreal at our mouthtingling IPA fest. Malt, perfume and sharp PNW hoppiness in the fabulous nose...as you breathe deeper, a subtle cinnamon-ginger "holiday" spicy pungency emerges...very subtle grapy-fruity flaovrs on the tongue, with a bit of orangey liqueur...nuanced and fascinating. Yeasty, lovely dark amber body. This was sampled alongside Dreadnaught, and though that masterpiece won by a fair margin for most of us, this is a worthy competitor.

My first sip told me that this was disgusting hop juice. The second sip said the same thing. After the third and fourth sip the overwhelming alcohol kicked in and I didn’t mind it so much. I was actually able to finish this hop extract and so I won’t destroy it in the ratings, but I don’t know how everyone gives over hopped beers such high ratings. It isn’t good just because it has a shit-load of hops in it!!! 5/3/4/3/11
RERATE: Mellon pour with a thin white film. Aroma is quite unique. Fruity and hoppy with just a touch of alcohol. Flavor is grapefruit, candy and resiny hops. Much better than I remember.

June 2006 release sampled on 7/4/06: Pours a transparent copper bronze with a nicely-lacing off-white head. Big fresh citrus and piny hop aroma has a very nice caramel malty balance. Body starts sweet and viscous, turning more bitter, crisp and grapefruity toward the resinous mildly warming finish. Well balanced, flavorful and best enjoyed fresh. A classic double IPA!

July 2005 release sampled on 9/25/05: Pours a transparent copper orange with a wonderfully dense and well-lacing froth of white head. Bright hoppy pine and grapefruit aroma has some alcohol notes. Body starts with some sweet gritty caramel malt and plenty of bittering hops toward a sticky, pine sap, warming bittersweet finish. Definitely doesn’t hide its alcohol as well as I remember. I’d like to let it age so that the alcohol becomes more hidden, but then the hops would fade. Such a predicament. It’s appearance seems to have improved though.

Bottle. A hazy amber color with an off-white head. A fresh grassy hop flavor with strong pine (almost mint-like). A smooth and delightful dance on the palate despite the intense hops. Amazingly easy to drink despite the imperial IPA status.

The commercial description of this beer is very accurate. The orangish copper body poured very clean and clear, and the just gently off-white head seemed to continue billowing up after I had stopped pouring. Very good retention on the head, but I’m not sure that is nessecarily a plus, lots of lacing. The first sip is very floral tasting, bitter, and caused a warm dry sensation in my mouth. Alcohol is very prevalent. The hops jump out stronger and stronger with every sip and really build a unique taste on ones pallate. I gave the pallate the lowest percent rating out of all of the categories because of the warm dry sensation. It does make you want more and more, and I found it hard to just sit back and enjoy. It was the only beer I had that night and I finished the whole bottle in about ten minutes. (Fast for me). This beer stands very strong as far as double IPAs go. Its unique, complex, and does not let you down. Snaps for alesmith!!! On a sad note, the night I had this my friends were all celebrating a good friend of mine’s birthday and drinking Yulesmith on cask and Barrel Aged Speedway Stout. It brings a tear to my eye.

Dark golden in color with a frothy head. Smell is hops. Taste is well balanced hops with a strong malt profile. Not a Cali-Hop bomb. Very balanced and very well done. Smooth and easy drinking. Never noticed or felt the ABV. Another fine offering from the folks at Alesmith.
