CptGreencoat (68), Kettering, Ohio, USA Feb 18, 2009 Pours to a hazy, dark copper with a one finger, tan head. Nose is hops, citrus and malt. This is much more complex than I would have thought. It’s sweet, creamy, hoppy, and warming while maintaining a very nice balance. This is an excellent brew worth looking forward to every year. MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Feb 17, 2009 Poured from a 22oz bomber and served in a snifter. This beer poured a slightly cloudy, dark copper red with a thick, rocky tan head. Amazing retention and lacing. The aroma consisted of fresh pine, citrus, and rich caramel. Hoppy and malty sweet. The flavor included chewy caramel, fresh citrus, light pine, brown sugar, and just a hint of dark chocolate. Nice interplay between the malt and hops creating a good balance. The alcohol is hidden very well. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and slightly sticky. Light carbonation. Big and bold, but quite drinkable. Nice beer. Sonicdescent (374), Donora, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 15, 2009 Looks just perfect with a deep frothy white head and a dark color pour with active carbonation in my Sam Adams Sensory glass. Smells good but not as outstanding as the profile would have lead me to believe. Taste is similar in profile to a barleywine. Mouth is pretty thick. Overall this is another winner from Alesmith. ElDuderino (136), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA Feb 14, 2009 Bottle, Pours a dark bloody crimson body that is perfectly translucent with a thick tight light brown head. Smells of daisy buds and sweet heavy malts mix with the dominant smells of citrus fruit. Flavors of grapefruit, blood orange and thick toasty malts are most prevalent while I sense some notes of dusty brewers yeast that creates a dry creamy sensation. The mouthfeel of this brew is a unique experience with creamy exploding sensations along with a dry bitter tongue feel and the littlest amount of alcohol soak. This is one of my favorite beers to cuddle up with on a cold night. j12601 (1151), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Feb 13, 2009 Bottle. Pours a brandy hued copper with a medium size smooth foam head, off white in color. Citrus hops rush to the nose even while pouring. Sweet malt scents and just the faintest hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium thick, sweet and malty with vigorous carbonation. Finishes with a nice lingering grapefruit and quinine bitter, and the subtlest hint of that sweet malt from earlier. Very clean, very easy drinking.
fidel (886), Livermore, California, USA Feb 10, 2009 Pours dark amber, piney, malty, caramel, spicey, citrus, little alcohol, little dark fruits. WinoInTraining (104), Longmont, Colorado, USA Feb 9, 2009 Tasty. Intensely malty ans spicy. Deep and rich. Massive texture, enveloping. wow. BrotherGrendel (551), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Feb 9, 2009 A- Poured a dark copper/amber color with a large, frothy, off-white head; excellent, sticky lacing throughout
S- BIG, sweet caramel maltiness, tones of floral and citrus hops
T- Taste consistent with aroma: big, bold maltiness dominates initially and gradually blends into mostly with citrus hops that last through a long aftertaste
M- Very smooth feel, medium body with lively carbonation, oily hops coat the mouth
D- Very pleasant and easy to drink; great smell and taste, but I am a little underwhelmed by the hops, alcohol presence is subtle, I could drink a few of these on a cold, winter night.
