frylock (998), Buffalo, New York, USA Mar 27, 2008 Purchased at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo NY (Hopefully more Alesmith to come): Pours a huge rocky head atop a reddish-brown body. Resinous hops and some light toasty malts and maybe some rye in the aroma. Spicy hop flavors up front that are balanced out by some light malt sweetness. Some fruits, melon and apricot, accompanied by hints of caramel. Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 27, 2008 From bottle courtesy of dpjuart. Smooth heavy hoppy nose, with caramel and malty sweetness. Brown sugar and light ozone, mild spicyness. Dark amber-brown, with foamy lacing off-white head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet, caramel and brown sugar. Great hoppy flavor from start to finish, malty sweetness. Fairly complex but good balance between malt and bitter. Mild alcohol warming. Nice bitter lasting after, but not harsh. Soonah (900), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Mar 25, 2008 The pour was a vibrant ruby and copper swirl that had a bit of turbidity to it. The head was creamy, thick and off-white. It just refused to budge off the top of the glass. Thick, sticky lacing remained. The aroma was thick caramel malt, spicy, piney hops and very mild citrus. The flavor followed suit with the caramel malt and spicy hops dominating over the standard citrus/pine hop combo. The mouthfeel was medium to full bodied and super nice. These guys do terrific work. Alldaydrinker (557), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA Mar 22, 2008 Pours almond color with a slight haze, easily aggravated off white fluffy head that resides with outstanding head retention and some lacing of the glass. Nose of burnt caramel, nuts, pine, strong citrus and raisan. Initial taste of rich caramel pours of the mouth with a syrupy mouthfeel and rich sugary sweetness. Pine and grapefruit fufill mid to finishing palate nicely. Finishing above average duration and hoppy continouance. Sticky lips and mouthfeel. Medium body. Rich tasty and enjoyable. hoplover406 (204), Crofton, Maryland, USA Mar 22, 2008 WOW! Absolutely MONSTOROUS head that refuses to die. Sticky lacing like I ain’t never seen. This one is in the dictionary under: Amber. Clean all around. Pine, resin, nuts and grass in the aroma. The malt profile is just squeaky clean and sufficient. This is no doubt the cleanest DIPA that I have ever had. My first beer from this brewery and IMO the hype is substantiated. Tejas (693), Dallas, Texas, USA Mar 21, 2008 Well, this one looks great with a f’ing huge head of foam but in the end the amount becomes a total pain in the ass. Very smooth and well balanced. Just the right amount of hops and sweetness. No alcohol bite, just a little alcohol flavor along with some pumpkin, cherry and cinnamon flavors. Great beer but $11.50 is steep for 1 bomber. tripelthreat (75), Soquel, California, USA Mar 17, 2008 Bottle to Stone IPA glass. Huge, finely bubbled head that becomes a meringue-like topping on a blood orange-red body. Caramel and toffee dominate the flavor with the grapefruit and pine and a little spice bringing up the rear. Very soft on the palate with just enough carbonation. Very well made and easy to drink, but just a little too sweet without being cloying.
