Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

Pours copper with a fairly dark tan head. The aroma is very malty with bready caramel. It is fairly musty with dark toffee and obvious abv. Medium / full body with fairly gentle carbonation. The flavor starts with barleywine like maltiness, a good amount of caramel and a welcoming alcohol burn. the finish has some woodiness, toffee, vanilla, sharp bitterness, cream and an increase in the alcohol. This is very good, but the summer version wins out for me.

Update Rating 4/11/09: 22 oz. bottle - thanks to padrefan98 for the bonus brew and opportunity to revisit;same appearance, etc; hop syrup & dose of spice; raw, malty, syrupy; not so sure this time around; i love a hop bomb, but this has a little much in the syrupy & spice side of things

Original Rating 11/19/07 (4.4 overall) 22 oz. bottle (tasting hosted by after4ever) - dark amber with white head upon pouring; big aromas of malts and hops; malt flavors are thick as well and mixed in with some spice; hop kick is mild; slightly bitter aftertaste; my first AleSmith brew did not disappoint

22oz. Pours dark red with a huge, rocky, off-white head. Tremendous lacing - some of the thickest I’ve ever seen. Aroma is piney hops and caramel malt sweetness. Taste is bitter with a tingly mouthfeel. Earthy. Caramel. Sweet and malty. This has a strong sweetness to it that is the least cloying I’ve ever experienced. Really nice malty flavor with enough hop bitterness to even it out. I’m not really a fan of red ales or imperial reds but this is fantastic.

Bottle from Pantanap. Pours amber colored with thin tan head. strong pine and citrus hop aroma with some malts hints. Citrus and grapefruit hop flavors come at first which mellows well with the sweeetness and the caramel and biscuit malt flavors. Pleasant bitterness and mouthfeel. This Imperial red ale with its nice malt backbone offers more balance than the usual double IPAs which I prefer. Thank you Kan!

Yes! A great wintertime ale. This Yule shifts a profound IPA just enough into other flavors of orangepeel, malts and very understated spice. On tap a sweet creaminess really takes over the body and makes it refreshing as all hell - like Dec 06 as a spritzer.
