Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

22 oz bomber shared with willblake and Dickinsonbeer thanks to Pardefan98. Poured a great looking reddish/bownish/amber with a big frothy white head. Aroma was piney hops with just a slight hint of the 9.5% alcohol. Palate was very smooth with a medium body that had just the right touch of carbonation. Flavor was very hop forward that became moe apparent upon warming with just the right amount of malt balance. This was one great beer.

I love me some spice and this brew doesn’t disappoint. Sure its a double IPA and wildly bitter, but there is some strong substance here and a smooth taste. This was better than the summer ale and will certainly warm you up on a cold winter’s night.

thanks mgumby! Super malty aroma, molasses, caramel, some citrus and berries hiding in there, a subtle spiciness. Pours a dark amber reddish color. Hefty dose of malt and hops in the flavor, malty caramel and brown sugar, with spicy citrus hops, sharp hop bite, with a smooth sweet finish.

650 mL bottle. Clear orange red with a fizzy white head. Aroma of malt, sugar, and yeast. Silky palate. Big sweet malty taste, molasses, brown sugar, and hints of fruit and alcohol in the slightly bitter finish.

God, I waited for this one for a long time in Portland. Poured from a bottle and let’s face it, you can’t EVER go wrong with Alesmith! Very dark color for an Impy IPA. Wicked levels of piney/hoppy in the aroma. Huge mouthfeel right off the bat. I am not a hop head by any standards, but I can clearly see how this was rated so high. Lots of complexity in the flavor between bitter and deeper sweets, keeps it interesting. Thats why I think it’s great. Great balance for a 8.5%er. But.............Hercules is a far superior IPA imo. If you can find this double ipa, find Great Divides and compare...

Medium amber color with a reddish hue - cirtrusy aroma with notes of cherry, hops and pine. Malty flavor with smooth sweetness. Alcohol is rather mild. Some hoppiness throughout and a clean, dry finish. Terrific.

2006 Bottle (also have an 05 via trade with WeeHeavySD that I’m gonna let sit for awhile). Reddish-amber color with a med-lg. and persistent off-white head. Big hop aroma with lots of citrus and pine plus some sugary-dark candy detectable. Taste is big, sticky, and well-hopped. Citra-pine dominates upfront with plenty of big, sugary malts. Really nice. I’ll still opt for the Double Bastard if given the choice though, as the "red" malts are not my favorite. Still a really nice and well hopped ASA.

Blam, this is a good one. I worried that I’d sat on this bottle for too long, but the thing still tastes fairly crisp but with much smoother malting than the first bottle I had (some time ago now). It’s by no means a heavy red, but rather has a very silky feel with a nicely integrated palate of mild butterscotch, some cardamom, and a trace of pine. Excellent stuff as usual from this brewery.
