Cliff (355), Avon Lake, Ohio, USA Apr 17, 2007 22 oz. bottle, poured a deep amber color with a thick white head. Copious aromas of floral and citrus hops penetrating through the thick malty curtain. Very heavy flavor, lots going on, nice balance between hops and malt. A bomber was tough to drink in one sitting just because it was so thick. A nice beer but I enjoy the summer version much better. drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 16, 2007 Updated: Jan 6, 200922oz, about 6months of age on it so i’ll have to re-rate fresh. pours reddish brown with big off-white head. nose has big caramelly malts with healthy hop kick in the background. flavor is still pretty bitter but definetly on the malty side of ASA. big caramel and toffee malts combined with PNW hops. alcohol is well hidden. carbination is medium. a tasty brew indeed but i think i’d like to have this fresh or aged 2 years.3.9.
11/08 - 2006 vintage aged 2 years and wow this aged so poorly! cooked vegetables with nothing really left over. gross. Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA Apr 12, 2007 Dark bronze/copper color. Big aroma, balanced with malt & hops. Tremendous big, rich and coating mouth feel, which seems to elevate the flavors. Fantastic flavor, which is more malt accented. The malt is so decadent and provides an astounding flavor of caramel and big fruit. Then come the hops, which deliver underlying pine, exceptional bitterness and a great citrusy finish. This is one hell of a beer. jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA Apr 12, 2007 Updated: Aug 9, 200722 oz bomber...nice offering from Alesmith...had to re-rate, last time I had this was about 9 months ago. A lot better this time around, weird how that palate changes huh? Reminds me of the Dead by Dawn 2006 but with a little more bitter hop character and a great level of overall balance. I tad on the sweet side - so if that isn’t your thing, it def won’t be your favorite wheninhell (485), louisville, Kentucky, USA Apr 8, 2007 big thanks to dirty martini for this beauty. crystal clear dark copper.....almost light brown. visible sparkling carbonation. great creamy fluffy off white head. great lacing. it just looks great. nicely balanced toasted almost oak like malt and piney hop aroma with a hint of orange and vanilla. flavor just as balanced. sweet sugar cane toasted malt oak with great bitter spicy piney hop undertones. finish sweet sugar cane spicy black pepper just as balanced. lively carbonation. full body.
very nice beer. great balance. Thanks again Larry! jmikolich (405), Athens, Ohio, USA Apr 8, 2007 Updated: Aug 25, 200722oz bottle, pours a decidedly reddish copper color, bottle is well balanced with a nice long finish, nice and solid from Alesmith, cant wait to get my hands on the summer version.
Aged Version: Meh, the hops have faded and melded into a nice balanced beer with little to no resemblance of a IIPA the malts are really shining here. DaMenace123 (250), Houston, Texas, USA Apr 7, 2007 Bomber from the brewery. Copper color with strong off-white head. Powerful beer all around. Complex aroma of sharp hops, cinnamon, caramel, dark fruit. Aroma starts with cinnamon and caramel malts, then grapefruit hop bitterness. Well balanced, alcohol is hidden well. Excellent. Illini08 (528), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Apr 5, 2007 Duane shared a bottle of this with me. Thanks Dad! I’d been looking forward to trying this one and actually didn’t know what I was drinking when I started tasting it. It wasn’t until I was partially done that Duane told me what it was! I got excited just looking at this one though. Big, fluffy head and a great dark copper hue. Strong hoppy and slightly spicy aroma. Very malty and well balanced flavor with just a hint of spices. Another solid brew from Alesmith. Even though I enjoyed the summer version even more than this one, this was still a treat to drink.
