Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

Wonderful dark amber color, hazy, with red and mahogany reflex; medium head. It has a very nice aroma, sweet caramel, powerful hops, fruity (tangerine, oranges, plums…), resiny and some vanilla. The mouthfeel is very bold, nevertheless smooth; it has a strong flavor of dark caramel, rhubarb candies, medium sweetness, full hopping, dynamic, with moderate resins and bitter orange peels; long and balanced final, yet strong and chewy. Very powerful, but also very well brewed. Excellent.

Pours deep amber with a large fluffy/rocky beige head. Strong aroma of piny/resinous hops, raisins, light cinnamon, fine brandy, and light citrus zest. Flavor is lighter than expected. Creamy dark fruit, and lighter than expected, but still fairly prevalent piny hops. A fair amount of yeasty spice in the background as well. Palate is creamy, medium/full, and resinous. Maltier than expected from the aroma, but well balanced, and dangerously easy drinking.

Pours a ruby red/caramel brown depending on how you view it. Aroma is very pleasant: The grapefruit hops and sweet heavy malt is apparent on the nose, as is a little dark fruit later on. The flavor is initially of caramel, then bitter hops, and a noticeable nuttiness around the top of my palate. I also get honey and rum cake towards the end, as well as a couple of other good flavor characteristics that I can’t quite describe. Pretty complex, more than I expected. Palate is sticky, thick, a little syrupy. The carbonation disappears after this sits in a glass for a few minutes. Ultimately, I’m diggin’ it. Not life-changing but it’s very pleasant and its quality is very apparent. Overall, very good minus.

Bomber from brewery. Pours a red/brown plum color with small off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, fruit (grapefruit, raisin), and light alcohol. First taste is noticeably on the sweet malty side but transitions very smoothly into mild hop bitterness. Overall it’s a great balance between the sweetness and bitterness. Smooth and easy finish with slight lingering bitterness. The 8.5% (did they tone it down this year?) alcohol is barely perceptible except for the slight warming effect.

Bottle 65cl. Nice deep red color with a medium sized beige head. Aroma is faded hops and some pine along with some caramel malt. Really smooth moutfeel with plenty of spicey and hoppy notes. Some malt and sweetness to. Ends rather bitter and dry.

Bottle (8,5% ABV). An unclear deep red beer with a small, but quite persistent white/beige head. The aroma is powerful and very hoppy with notes of pine, grapefruit, leaves, caramel and light alcohol. The flavour has a high sweetness, with good bitterness to balance. Very hoppy, citrusy and sugary. Lightly sticky, very lightly abrasive. Medium to full body, average/lively carbonation, long finish with medium to high bitterness, quite well hidden alcohol. Very good, some complexity, great aroma, maybe it doesn’t distiguish itself from similar beers, but I like the style.
