Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

Bottle, free (!) from pantanap. Thanks! Pours a bronze-ish color with medium head and medium lacing. Aroma is caramel, vanilla and hops. Taste is more caramel and hops, along with spice, dates, banana and candied citrus. Very nice sipping beer.

Super thick - like pine sap mixed with a shot of grapefruit juice. This spicey wonder is for the hop heads, but is also wonderfully balanced with a caramel sweet bready malt. Extremely smooth body, long lingering resiny finish. Great - Thanks Jcalabre

Thanks to doulos31 for scoring this one! Poured a nice amber color with a very pillowy head. Lots of sedimentation. Aroma was of light pines, citrus, resinous, light grapefruits, and a bready scent. The flavor was much of the same, supported by a malty base and alcohol that wasn’t hiding. Mouthfeel was somewhat heavy and carbonated. I dunno, not all that impressive, given the hype. Flavor was somewhat straight forward and indistinguishable from other good but not great samples of the style.

This elixir pours into the glass with a deep amber/red body topped by a thick, off white head with lots of lacing left behind. The aroma is slightly sweet yet bitter and hoppy with a grapefruit note, a nice sweet maltiness in the background and a very slight metallic note. The flavor is bitter, piney and hoppy with a sweetness from malt and a touch of grapefruit. The finish is piney and bitter. Medium to full bodied, slightly dry and warming.

Nice appearance. Good head that leaves nice lacing on the glass, sometimes sheeting. The piney hops overpower the malt but if you pay really close attention you'll notice a nice malt background but it's hard to tell if there's much complexity although I did seem to pick up some creamy fruitiness. The alcohol is just barely noticeable.

Bottle (Courtesy of FlacoAlto): Poured a deep copper color ale with huge white head with pretty good retention. Aroma of deep citrus hops with a strong presence of semi-sweet malt. Taste is totally dominated by the mix of citrus hops and strong caramel malt. Body is just above average and carbonation is medium. Alcohol is well hidden. While this is not a bad beer, I feel that it is a bit too one-dimensional and would probably have been happier drinking their regular IPA.
