Reddish copper-brown, but golden as the sunlight hits it. Chewy malts and massive hoppiness, expertly balanced, bending both arms of the scale. Piney and caramelly, citrusy and thick, warming and fulfilling. This is near perfect to me, a massive thick, chewy, wonderful treat. Thanks to herbjones!!! BeerLimey (1873), California, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jan 13, 2003 Clouded (bottle conditioned) orangey amber, moderate head formation. Aromas of fresh tangerine, accompanied by pineapple and pink grapefruit. Gains a little spice as it opens up. Sweet medley of fruit juices on the palate with tangerine and apricot most prominent, like a tropical breakfast juice blend. Makes a great forerunner to the hoppy citiric grapefruit in the second half. iowaherkeye (1872), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 22, 2007 22oz bomber, no date, though I’m fairly sure it’s an ’06. Pours a clear ruby caramel with a lively four finger head that takes ten minutes to fade enough to drink. Maybe I let this get a little too warm. Aroma of resiny, piney, and spicy hops, some dusty caramelly malts. This kinda reminds me of Founders Red’s Rye. Flavor is a bit more straight bitterness and alcohol, though the hops are still apparent. A bit of toasty malts and some vinous charascteristics are in there as well. To be noted, ETOH isn’t hidden too well. Finish is dry. Medium to full bodied, moderate carbonation. Pretty good brew. RAYBOY01 (1858), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 7, 2007 This brew pours a rich robust red with a thick white rocky head, which releases an abundant hop aroma. The initial flavor though is all malt sweetness...roasted caramel, dried fruits, and hints of molasses and brown sugar. The hops are pretty potently pine and grapefruit and really get more resiny as it warms. I actually found the alcohol pretty well concealed...certainly THERE, but not in-your-face about it. A quality product, by all means, but not the opus magnus I’ve been expecting. mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 25, 2007 Pours a hazy deep red, with a thick lacy off white head. Very nice looking. Smells of sweet malts, cinnamon, hops, and caramel. Very intriguing. Taste is very complex, pretty nice grapefruit hops taste, but mixed with some brown sugar and caramel. Some sweet malts balance out the flavor. I love the mixture to this beer. Its not overpowering in any form. The 9.5% is hidden just enough, but reveals itself towards the finish. A treat for sure. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 12, 2007 Dark bronze/copper color. Big aroma, balanced with malt & hops. Tremendous big, rich and coating mouth feel, which seems to elevate the flavors. Fantastic flavor, which is more malt accented. The malt is so decadent and provides an astounding flavor of caramel and big fruit. Then come the hops, which deliver underlying pine, exceptional bitterness and a great citrusy finish. This is one hell of a beer.
