Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

Pours a five-finger cream head that fades very slowly leaving a good lace. Cloudy amber color. Medium carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Malty/alcohol nose. Flavor is tart raisins, caramel and some alcohol. Nice holiday ale. Yeast settles out in glass. $4.70 for a 22 oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma. Label has ABV at 8.5%.

NorCal Feb ’08 - Insane. Yep. Completely insane. This beer is so damned drinkable, you’ll be lying on the floor in no time after a few of these. The succulent hop aroma is resting squarely on the shoulders of a huge malt presence which makes it just almost perfect. Citrus comes out loud and clear, with the caramel smoothness keeps it all chugging along. Appearance is a clear, copper in color with a beautiful thick creamy head. Flavor is amazingly refreshing with a strong resinous hop punch to the tastebuds and then the smooth caramel flavor calms it all down. Just an outstanding beer. Damn, I wish I could get this in Northern Cali.

2006 Bottle (also have an 05 via trade with WeeHeavySD that I’m gonna let sit for awhile). Reddish-amber color with a med-lg. and persistent off-white head. Big hop aroma with lots of citrus and pine plus some sugary-dark candy detectable. Taste is big, sticky, and well-hopped. Citra-pine dominates upfront with plenty of big, sugary malts. Really nice. I’ll still opt for the Double Bastard if given the choice though, as the "red" malts are not my favorite. Still a really nice and well hopped ASA.

Bomber thanks to riversideAK. Pours a nice orange/reddish hue with a powerful thick head. The aroma hints of Christmas trees, cookies, fresh hops, and citrus. The taste doesn’t let you down; a smooth malt combined with a bunch of hops, citrus, sweet fruits, spices, and a bit of roasted flavors. Like a Christmas dinner bottled. An awesome beer. There is almost no notice that it is 9.5%. Decadent. More please.

(Bottle, thanks to hopscotch) Pours hazy red orange. Hoppy aroma with fruity notes, almost jelly beans like. Apricots, pine, grapefruit, flowers - mostly roses - and some citrus in the background. Malt brings caramel and toffee. Spicy, hoppy flavour with apricots, citrus and pine. Decent caramelly and syrupy malt backdrop. Soft and round mouthfeel with a medium to full dry finish. Medium sweet and medium to full bitterness. Good.
