Aromas of citrus (oranges) and some malts. Starts out sweet and ends in a nice hoppy bite (but not over the edge). Well balanced. Some pine. Very good beer and I glad I picked this up while on vacation! jcwattsrugger (5581), Florida and, New Jersey, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 4, 2008 Objectively speaking:
Very solid imperial IPA of confident caramelly leanings.
I like:
Clean and not too thick. Very fragrant hops providing a broad range of aromas (flowery grapefruit, ripe orange, juicy spruce). Excellent evolution with the bitterness cutting through the sweetness with excellent timing. Seriously drinkable for its heavy bulk.
I dislike:
It just does not seem as perfumey as the summer edition, but otherwise, for Californian beer fans, this is the quintessence, up to the appearance. Magicdave6 (5558), London, Greater London, England

Alround rating: Caramalt, citrus, grassy hop, more balanced than its brother(summer) however i believe this was a ’05 bottle and had probably lost quite a bit of its hop character. Tasty stuff. hopscotch (5543), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

Hazy mohogany hue with medium-sized particles of sediment floating in the glass. Huge, white frothy head. Mostly lasting with excellent lacing.
Aromas of honey, pine, citrus fruit, flowers, milk chocolate and alcohol.
The flavor is very malty with a blast of caramel... for just a moment. The hops quickly kick in with flavors of pine and spruce. Nice black pepper and warm alcohol with a final earthy, straw flavor.
Great I.P.A. Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale on steriods. Christmas in April.
Thanks go out to hoprus for this excellent, world-class beer! CaptainCougar (5532), Rockville, Maryland, USA

Dark ruby copper color with a nice, off-white lacy head. Very well balanced rich sweet butterscotch and bold hoppy aroma. Full, caramely sweet syrupy palate is nicely balanced with a tangy fresh bitterness. Hides its alcohol quite nicely. A consistently excellent brew!
2002 rated on 3/18/2003: Butterscotchy hop aroma flows from the caramel brown body with off-white head. Very rich and creamy mouthfeel with some sweetness and a powerful, but balanced hoppy bitterness. Dry, sweet finish that hides the alcohol extremely well. One of the best imperial reds I’ve had. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 28, 2009 Medium, yellowish head over hazy orange-brown ale. End of bottle solid yeast. Grapey, orangey and finally resiny hops, powerfully wafting up upon opening. Bitter, resiny hopsflavour, with a wry, leafy dimension, verging upon quinine. Bitter onslaught mellows with time and more bready or cakey malts announcing themselves; but the dry finish remains throughout. Well-bodied, very slick, bit oily and long-lasting bitter-hoppy aftertaste. Well-crafted, if not really spectacular dark strong American ale. Could grow upon me.
