Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

[bottle] Spicy melanoidiny malt aroma with tons of grapefruit and a little biscuit. Hazy red-amber with a lasting, beige cover. Flavour is a blast of US hops that gives a slightly salty feel and develops into a spicy and biscuity malt, ending in a dry bitterness. Excellent balance for such a big beer.

22 oz bomber. Hop Heads, rejoice at this offering !!! Pours a coppery golden color with a thick creamy beige head. Smells of intense hops, pines, citrus, vanilla, and butterscotch. Taste is similar to the smell. Very thick piney taste with hints of vanilla, butterscotch and citrus. A powerful imperial/double ipa. One of the best of its kind, however, not as good as the Three Floyds Dreadnaught. Superb, regardless.

[from before ratings were separated] Thanks to Harlequinn for dealin. Dark copper/brown. Ginormous, dense, light tan, sponge like head turns rocky as it settles. Nose is all hops: floral, poison, resin, citrus, spiciness, trix cereal, and a touch of soap. Excellently bitter. All the same characters hang around in the flavor joined by just enough malt. Clean finish and dry, bitter aftertaste. Medium, balanced body. Perfect malt level prevents an all out hop assault on the palate, maintains a high level of drinkability.

Bottled 650ml. Courtesy of badlizard. 8.5 ABV. Appearance: It pours a clear deep amber beer with a nicely lasting beige head. Some lacework. Aroma: Very strong and deeply inviting. Blueberries, caramel, juniper, licorice, resiny hops and bubble gum showing up. Flavor and palate. Full bodied. Sweet malty with a good bitterness. Really thick mouthfeel. Hints of blueberries, caramel, juniper, grape and resiny hops. Some dark chocolate sneaking in. Licorice in the finish which is rather dry. Overall impression: Surprisingly thick palate, too thick for my liking. The nose is great, extremely complex and pleasant in my opinion. Thanks a lot badlizard!

Bottle. Aroma luscious concoction of grapefruit, mango, passion fruit, floral notes, a touch of bitterness from these hop-dominated impressions. Flavor continues along the same lines, at first adds a seemingly perfect amount of sweet malt, but toward the end it becomes a little too sweet. The body isn’t at all syrupy as might be expected from the increasing sweetness and remains playful throughout. Just that slightly overbearing sweetness (which is a major surprise after initial impressions of near perfection) that keeps this one from excellence, but obviously with my 3.9 I’m splitting hairs here.

Update Rating 4/11/09: 22 oz. bottle - thanks to padrefan98 for the bonus brew and opportunity to revisit;same appearance, etc; hop syrup & dose of spice; raw, malty, syrupy; not so sure this time around; i love a hop bomb, but this has a little much in the syrupy & spice side of things

Original Rating 11/19/07 (4.4 overall) 22 oz. bottle (tasting hosted by after4ever) - dark amber with white head upon pouring; big aromas of malts and hops; malt flavors are thick as well and mixed in with some spice; hop kick is mild; slightly bitter aftertaste; my first AleSmith brew did not disappoint
