Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

Update Rating 4/11/09: 22 oz. bottle - thanks to padrefan98 for the bonus brew and opportunity to revisit;same appearance, etc; hop syrup & dose of spice; raw, malty, syrupy; not so sure this time around; i love a hop bomb, but this has a little much in the syrupy & spice side of things

Original Rating 11/19/07 (4.4 overall) 22 oz. bottle (tasting hosted by after4ever) - dark amber with white head upon pouring; big aromas of malts and hops; malt flavors are thick as well and mixed in with some spice; hop kick is mild; slightly bitter aftertaste; my first AleSmith brew did not disappoint

Bottle at Hop Devil Grill in NYC, then tap at City Beer Store in SF. Really solid winter beer. They did not spare any hops on this one. Amber/red color with medium carbonation. Complex flavor profile with spices, citrus and pine, spices, sweet malt, and bitter hops. Fairly full palate.

2002 bottle: Dark caramel coloured. Generous head that diminishes into a spattering of small bubbles inside of a thin white layer. Whisps of alcohol tickle the nose, while pine cones, grapefruit rinds, and caramel make a more forceful entrance. Juicy palate dripping with complexity. . . tart green apples, pears, chewy hops, and some balancing caramel. Finish has more going on that the common IPA hop slam dunk. . . the hops becomes gooey and sweet sticking to the tongue and mouth like honey. A fabulous creation. Cheers Jake Barnes!

Huge thanks to Kryptic for this gem. Very enticing aroma. Spicy, citrusy hops. Tantalizing sweet (but in no way cloying) malt. Some caramel sweetness, but delicate. Very well balanced. Pours firey copper with a big, sticky, creamy llight khaki head. Excellent retention and lacing. Flavor profile matches the aroma. Spicy hops expertly interwoven with sweet toffee malt. Wonderfully balanced. Creamy on the tongue. Mostly full bodied. Finishes with a zesty, spicy hoppiness. Really wonderful stuff!

heavy grain hop aroma dominates, pretty much overwhelming the backing malt aromas, flavor is also hop dominated, tangy hops with a touch of carmel malt in background, also has a zing to it very much like rye,hop bittering finish is lip smacking, tasty as can be

Bomber pours out to a hazy chestnut red that light barely penetrates. Aromas rise from my glass in well-defined stages: first, cinnamon and woods, followed by mandarin orange and bright citrus hoppiness, finished with rich caramel malt. Tastes of brown sugar cake and toffee, some leather and outdoorsy hops as it finishes. Rich and complex, intensely concetrated, and very amiable. Cheers!

Beautiful pour of clear ruddy brown with three finger cream colored head. Nose is rich with pieapple hop aroma, with malt sweetness. The flavor is equal to the nose in richness and mild sweetness with the pineapple standing out. Smooth, subtle creaminess in the mouthfeel. Very nice.
