Pretty tasty brew, it was pretty close to a barleywine for me. Earthy grains on the nose. Nice, yeasty esters and strong caramel or brown sugar sweetness and a natural, honey sweetness that complemented the thick, foamy palate. Earthy hops, but not very bitter. A little kick from the alcohol but well balanced. This is a great winter and dessert beer. garthicus (1307), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 13, 2009 Bottle. Pours a brandy hued copper with a medium size smooth foam head, off white in color. Citrus hops rush to the nose even while pouring. Sweet malt scents and just the faintest hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium thick, sweet and malty with vigorous carbonation. Finishes with a nice lingering grapefruit and quinine bitter, and the subtlest hint of that sweet malt from earlier. Very clean, very easy drinking.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 5, 2009 Crazy pour, a little bit produced a huge head with a strong dusty old basement aroma. Not bad or off, just dry. Hazy caramel in the glass, pale blond head that did not want to settle down at all. More deep concentrated heavy and nearly syrupy malt, and that dense creamy head. There’s a lot of hops here, everything is amped to 200% across the board and there’s not much in the way of subtle. I like the beer for the consistency and intensity, but I don’t get much in the way of personal character. Maybe I saw the 100 and expected more. Sure plenty of folks have described the qualities so I will tell you why I like it so much. It is an american strong ale that’s hopped to death. It is absolutely complex and you can enjoy every tiny bit without a face full of bitterness. Do not get me wrong, I expect hoppy bittereness but this is the perfect amount IMHO. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 14, 2003 Wonderful aroma of pine and citrus. Fantastic anticipation of HOPS!! Appearance is terrific. Color is amber brown with big off white head that is retained. There will be massive lacing with this fine brew. Flavor is initially malty followed by a very nice dose of hops. Finish is tasty and very long lasting. I have to agree with the other lobbying for the imperial IPA designation. The high alcohol and presence of a malt backbone argue for the imperial status. I love this beer.
