Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

2002: 12/3/02 Had it on tap at the brewery while watching Peter, Tod and crew bottle it in the 22’s and having my jug filled with Anvil (ESB). Life is good. Golden orange color with a medium head. Aroma somewhat hoppy (duh). Flavor: Rich malt sweetness at the start, mildly hoppy and smooth finish. Good balance with a light dry citrus aftertaste. Nice after-burp to boot!
2003: 11/19/03 Picked up a jug@AleSmith Brewery- AWESOME! Happy Holidays

Pours dark amber, medium almond head. Big aroma of sweet malts and christmas spices. Big sweet malts and great christmas like spiciness balanced with all sorts o f hops flavors citrus, floral, leafy, but none being bitter, the bitterness was actually very low. This really was just like Great Lakes Christmas Ale without the spices and more malts and alcohol. Very complex and seriously hard to describe, just every aspect kicked ass and was awesome.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a small white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma of citrus, caramel, sweet malt, and alcohol. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and well hidden alcohol. Very good.

Thanks to Naven for the bottle. Hazy ruby/orange color with a huge head. Spare lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, oily resin and a great amount of caramel hops. Taste is big caramel malt with some hoppy-type spice. The alcohol is well hidden. Full body. Oily texture. Bitter finish. Pretty good, but is it a 100 percentile?

Bottle. Pours a musky caramel color, with a flirty wisp of white head, with tons of lacing. Big floral hops in the aroma, mostly grapefruit and other citrus. Big helping of vanilla and malty goodness, too. Flavor-wise, malt hits first, with big biscuit flavors. Hop comes through in the end, with a nice floral kick. Sticky mouthfeel, soft and creamy finish. As easy to drink as a 9.5% beer can get.

Location: 22 oz bottle from jcos’s trip to Rozi’s Wine and Liquor House, 12/5/09

Aroma: A nose of citrus hops, resin, caramel, pine
Appearance: Cloudy dark red color with a lasting tan head
Flavor: Taste is nicely hoppy, with just enough malts for balance
Palate: Smooth and medium-full bodied, easy drinking brew
Overall Impression: Overall this is a really good solid Imperial Red Ale, a style I almost always seem to enjoy. I like this one quite a bit, nicely done. Reminded me a bit of the Stone 13 in style. Anyway, quite a nice beer. I’m glad I got to try this one as I liked it a lot and it is not available in my area. Thanks, Justin!

2004, 22oz bottle. Beautiful amber-mahogany pour with solid carbonation and a nice looking head. Heavy caramel and nougat aroma predominate. Big malty sweetness. The taste is powerful! Potent sweet caramel with heavy pine and citrus running all through it. Wow! The mouth feel starts out creamy and finishes dry. I thought the carbonation could have been a bit less. This is a real kick in the mouth. I’ll drink it any time. Perhaps a younger sample will also be worth rating! Good thing Christmas is not far away!

Bomber from Market of Choice. Insanely well balanced with a huge hop flavor that threatens to run amuck but is saved by just the perfect amount of maltiness. A bit of booze and pine in the finish with some citrus floating around as well. Alesmith is just so damn great, I wish we could get all their beers up here.
