Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

22oz. bottle. Heavily red-shifted orange color with a massive rocky white head. Heavy resinous pine and candied citrus hop aromatics. Caramel, bread dough malt flavors up front give way to a ruddy vegetal and piney hop character. Residual volatile oil evergreen flavor in the finish, with a sturdy semblance of sweet maltiness underneath. Mouthfeel is fairly heavy medium, on the verge of chewiness but never quite there, somewhat drying in the finish.

Bottle: Bought in San Diego, drank with fellow RateBeerians rcasta & ramenen during an Ale testing session in El Salvador. This was the highlight of the day, my first perfect rating! Aroma, body, balance, alcohol level, nose, color, head, all incredible. There even lacing INSIDE the bottle after pouring!

Winter 2005 Version- Tasted on draft @ the brewery. By the brewer’s admission and by my tasting, this is not a IIPA (atleast this version is not). This is definitely a dbl red ale. Nice beer, but didn’t have the hop bite I was expecting. If you like this one, you’d love Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster.

2007 Winter. Pours a slightly fogged, ruby hued amber with a sizeable crème head. Lots of lace on the way down. Nose is very full hops. Flavor is very hoppy. Almost seems more like an hopheads IPA with a very minor amber ale edge to it. Mellows out over time and grows into a more sweet edged concoction. Feel is nice on the liquid and the carbonation is good too. This was nice, but it seems a bit too bright. I have a second bottle that I am going to let sit for a while to see what happens.

Pours a clean ruby red body with a large 2 1/2 finger sticky off-white froth. Strong hop aroma with an equally large malt backbone. The flavors are quite sweet and syrupy at first with a big bready flavor that completely buries the hops until the finish when I’m finally getting some really nice resiny citrus notes. Feel the heat a little bit also.

2002 release 22oz bottle pours a glowing hazy copper-orange color with a nice off-white head that leaves a sticky lacing in my glass. Wonderful aromas of fresh grapefruit, pineapple and pine, sticky and resiny pine and citrus flavors coat my tongue, hoppy as hell yet has a solid malt balance, full body with a full and creamy mouthfeel, nice sharp bitterness in it's lasting finish, wow I just wish I could get Alesmith in Missouri, many thanks go out to herbjones for chance to try this awesome brew.

Now here is something to be excited about! Color is sleightly hazy medium brown with a firm medium brown head. Aroma is a great mix of hops and malts with notes of grape/oranges and toffee plus some mild chocolate. Flavor is very very pleasing. Medium bitter with a smooth yet full sweetness backed up by a warming alchohol. It doesnt get much better using "standard" ingredients like this. Thumbs up

650ml bomber from the brewer. This is the 2006 winter yulesmith. Pours a cloudy reddish dark brown, with a huge khaki head that lasts forever. The head stands up like thick like a meringue, very nice. The aroma is strong with sweet caramel, anise and hops. Flavor is complex and loaded with chocolate, coffee, black licorice, pine, cedar and walnuts. The hops are well defined and prominent throughout the experience. The palate is full and satisfying. The finish is long with lingering bittersweet dark chocolate. This is a a great brew. Recommended.
