Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

Wonderful dark amber color, hazy, with red and mahogany reflex; medium head. It has a very nice aroma, sweet caramel, powerful hops, fruity (tangerine, oranges, plums…), resiny and some vanilla. The mouthfeel is very bold, nevertheless smooth; it has a strong flavor of dark caramel, rhubarb candies, medium sweetness, full hopping, dynamic, with moderate resins and bitter orange peels; long and balanced final, yet strong and chewy. Very powerful, but also very well brewed. Excellent.

Very nice Cascade hop aroma. Similar to the Hop 15 and the Two Hearted. Quite sweet with bitterness finishing on the palate. Nice citrus sweetness, pine also present. Balance between hop flavors/aroma and the bitterness. Great malt backbone and a well supported IPA.

Whaleman 2004: Poured a cloudy dark orange with a thick cream colored head. Big malty/candy/caramel aroma. Great hop/malt balance with a mild citrusy taste. Finish is slightly bitter. Full bodied. A great beer.

22oz July 04 release-Not much has changed in the flavor from the winter 03 version, but what did change was the balance and palate. This beer is wonderful. I have to bump the score up a little on this one! 22 oz bomber-pours a deep amber color with medium carbonation. Tight medium sized bubbles on the off-white head. Wonderful aroma of malts and citrus/piney hops-the best of all worlds! Very balanced and full aroma. The flavors are crazy-citrus (orange and pineapple), sour apples, carmal malts-slight similarities to SNCA in the malt and pineyness delivery. Body/palate is the only thing bringing this one down from the top spot because it was just slightly thin. big thanks to squidget for sending this one my way from AZ!!!

2002 edition - Huge fresh, clean hop nose. Red/orange color with a thin white head. Huge IPA with sweet grapefruit and spicey pine flavors. Very well balanced for such a big beer. Great beer and thanks to hopsrus for sharing.

Pours dark amber, decent head with good lacing. Aroma is very very hoppy, all citrus and pine needles. The flavor is quite balanced in light of the aroma, hops coming out at in the finish, nice malt backbone. Very nice mouthfeel, this is a thick warming beer. Alcohol is very masked for the 8.5%ABV.

My Bottom Line:
Toasted caramel malts churn a tooth-licking maple butter sweetness which achieves equilibrium with the multifaceted citrusy hops and their cedary, resinous bitterness. Goodness gracious, these guys are talented.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-An immense foam discharge setttles into a monument of a head atop the kaleidoscopic dark amber.
-That foam is a tad overzealous, but it is a hophead’s delight when tasted.
-That toffee candy/caramel maltiness is endless yet is far from cloying.
-Effervescence is a little too expansive for my tastes; I’d like to have the leisure the appreciate the well-endowed maltiness.
-This is very drinkable for its size; alcohol barely heats up the back end.
-Aroma is as complex and enticing as the flavor profile is delicious; West Coast glory personified.

Bottle.
