Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

2001 edition: Didn't expect to find this one today...dark orange glow...speckled off-white head...aroma was Insane!..creamy hop buds surrounded in a fruity display of grapefruits and cherries sitting in liquid carmel...flavor was grapefruit rinds surrounded by cherry ice cream, carmel maltiness always present but slightly off-balanced by the hops...alcohol well hidden but not invisible...gets better as it warms... Re-rate 8/5/2002 edition draught: This stuff glows and is pure hop juice, it was amazing Re-Rate Bottled 2002 : There something so creamy about this IPA in the bottle that it surpasses its san diego cousins..

Hazy rusty-brown body, silky beige head, and significant lacing. Floral, hoppy aroma with both candy and savory elements, the latter being reminiscent of AleSmith IPA. Also has notes of grapefruit, wood, and alcohol. Great flavor with exquisite balance of all key elements. This beer is subdued yet full-flavored and complex. Soft, subdued palate. Although a definite belly warmer, this beer is remarkably fine and delicate for a big beer.

Nice looking, with a reddish-copperish body and a pretty, dainty head. Cloudy, with floaties. Great aroma: juicy cherries, plums and caramelized hops. The flavor is crisp, with nicely balanced bitterness. A good helping of sweetness, but not syrupy like some other double IPA’s I’ve had. The carbonation is really nice: full, yet very, very smooth.

2002 edition: Wow! Hazy orange with a nice creamy head, great lace down the glass. Grapefruit/pine in the nose. Citrusy grapefruit with tiny sweet malts darting in and out on the tongue.... the hops give the lips a tingle. Warning: Massive hop burps! Nice balance for such a hoppy beer. Outstanding Christmas brew!

Thick reddish amber color with a decent sized head on top. The aroma is the what I like in a beer with too much hops for our own good. Hints of citrus (lemon lime, pineapple) floral notes and pine. The flavor has a good deal of maltiness to keep it somewhat balanced, but still, thats a whole lotta hops. It makes the sides of my jaw cringe at first, but does in fact leave my mouth with some warmth and robust malt flavor. Such a good brew. This rating is taken from when it was only listed as one. I had rated this then the summer in the same listing. Re-Rate of summer to follow.

(Rating #1253)

Bottled, brought from City Beer, SF. Clear amber color, short off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, big hop, some malt. As in all alesmiths again a perfect balance of big hop, pine and grapefruit on a malty background. Strong and tasty, but also quite soft. Great stuff.
