Commercial Description:
During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle. For the winter season, YuleSmith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer. Winter YuleSmith is packaged in traditional holiday red and green. Original Gravity Alcohol by Volume 1.085 9.5%

20061006 Bomber. Well, I’ve had this numerous times. In fact, it’s one of the beers I have traded for multiple times just to stock up for the long haul. Green-tinged amber reminds of motor oil in its color and obvious viscosity. Huge, thick, and lasting tan head fades to piles of dirty sea foam. Aroma is piney, pithy, and yeasty. Very nice to encounter some yeastiness come forward in a big US style strong ale. Palate is sticky, full, and thick. This stuff is obviously mellowed a bit it’s just delicious. Mild oxidation, mellowed hops, and juicy malts. Amazing beer.

I have waited eagerly for this wonderful brew to arrive from my brother via FedEx. Today as I watched college football (GT vs UGA) a knock came on the door, there it was, finally, my YuleSmith! Hazy orange color with a small tan head and very nice glass lacing. The citrusy grapefruit aroma hits you the minute the cap comes off of the bottle. More malty spiciness comes through as you breathe the aromas in deeply. The flavor is a wallop of hoppy grapefruit with some piney flavors. A slight pleasing sourness develops after the swallow. Very smooth medium body. This is a seriously good Imperial IPA.

Up to this point its the best beer I’ve had. My third Alesmith and the first one that had me fully convinced. A great ale from a great brewery.

22 oz. bottle from Jungle Jim’s. Muddy reddish-brown pour with a creamy off-white head. Big hop aroma of grapefruit, tangerines, and apricot. Flavor does not disappoint; big, bitter hops balanced with some toffee sweetness. Having sampled this in late summer to early fall this is at least 10 months old. At this point it is very close to barley wine territory. It’s an outstanding beer (does this brewery make bad beers?). Would love to try this fresh but the bottle I had was incredible.

Sweet hoppy malty red ale. Pours with redish pink head. Full round and sweet this beer is a touchdown.

07 version: OMFG this is a holy grail beer, after trying the summer version, how could it get any better, but I find this another blowout... there is nutin but gold here... aromas, incredible fresh hops, some sweet and roasted malts, high depth... appearance, what can you say? It is perfect, huge fluffy head that just lays there forever, lacing, my whole glass is covered with the caked on beige bubbles... flavor, fogetaboutit.. it is outstandingly strong hops and roasted malts, some chocolate, some caramel, it is complete, palate is the only fall back since the alcohol sneaks through a little and packs a hawaiin punch... overall, out-freakin-stounding.
