Commercial Description:
To acknowledge this year’s anniversary, our 11th, Allagash’s brewers decided to use a champagne yeast for both the primary and secondary fermentations. This beer was brewed with both Cascade and Northern Brewer hops and copious amounts of Belgian Aromatic Malt to achieve its vibrant garnet color and unique, malty palate. At a hefty 9% ABV, the alcohol in this brew is balanced by a light sweetness, a full-bodied mouth feel and a gentle, lingering hop character. Just prior to bottling, when there is no carbonation present in the beer, a fresh dose of sugar and yeast is added. After bottling, the beer is aged in our temperature-controlled cellar, where the yeast ferments the sugar and naturally carbonates the beer. This process, known as méthode champenoise, is the same traditional process we use for all of our bottled beers. The batch of 11th Anniversary Ale was bottled in May of '06 - 950 cases, six bottles in each case and is the only batch that will be available. Its aroma is redolent of red licorice, nutmeg, wild apple, and hard candy. Its taste is malty with date and fig notes with a finish that is crisp, striking a balance between dry and fruity. We suggest serving this rustic brew at cellar temperature. Our 11th Anniversary Ale would make a perfect addition to foods such as roast duck and venison, or with desserts like pumpkin pie and apple cobbler

Shared with blankboy, Hogtown Harry, GregClow and jerc, Harry’s bottle. Dark brown, small white head. Nice malty aroma - a little sour. Good taste - malty, spice a bit of alcohol heat. Good stuff.

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and jerc, my bottle. Hazy amber-orange, small wispy white head. Lovely caramel malt aroma, soft spice and yeast, floral hops, not much alcohol. Taste has more floral hop bitterness and noticeable alcohol, very malty but enough spice and bitterness to keep it balanced. Average somewhat sticky mouthfeel, lightly astringent and only slightly carbonated, not a long finish but there’s a warming alcohol presence. I really liked this, a very well done Belgian.

(750 ml bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/auburn/fl target=blank>Florian’s, cellared for 8 mos. after purchase) Champagne and bananas!...Cloudy brownish amber with a finger or less of cream color head that recedes to a thin, lasting layer. Aroma of light champagne, banana, cotton candy, light red wine and fruit. Mouthfeel is light and soft, yet has fullness. Light bit of champagne spritziness. Lightly dry. Sheets and weepy rings of lacing coat inside of glass. Tastes lightly rock-candy sweet with notes of banana and champagne-like grapeiness. Light notes of red wine. Actually quite nice and a little reminiscent of Ommegang (but not as rich or porty) or a lightened-up Allagash Dubbel.

Rated at the Pewaukee Tasting II 5/5/07. Mild, sweet, hoppy aroma, very balanced and attractive Unclear, dark amber in color; modest head Flavor, hop-dominant malt, seems more like a hoppy barley-wine that a belgian strong ale. Palate – medium-bodied, a little sweet.

Sample from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured an amber-chestnut color with a small tang head. The aroma was sweet, fruity and had a caramel undertone. The flavor was sweet, tart, fruity and had caramel underneath. The finish was long with caramel and fruity hops. Nice.

Slightly hazy amber with big head. Crisp green apple aroma, but not too sweet. Very light and crisp for a 9.2% beer. Pretty darn fantastic. Doesn’t knock your socks off, but has a light dark fruit taste and finishes almost like a good white wine. Love it.

Pours a red/brown with off-white head. Aroma of banana, light fruit, spice, and hints of citrus and caramel. Nice flavor of fruit (banana, fig, plum, etc), caramel, spice, and some brown sugar. Medium, full mouthfeel. Very enjoyable.

Semi-hazed with sediment, and caramel orange in color with a galaxy wisp extending on top. Stuffy nose of bleached concord grapes and some stuffy, orangey aged citric hops. Jam comes on white bread for an attic aroma subconsciously smuggling a bakery. Flavor affirms that we’re in strong ale territory. Cascade butter hum and a pool of caramel sits on a box of unopened wafers, emitting both stuffy sweet toffee superlatives along with a hidden cardboard trait. Candied pears hint around the sides while a butter comb base moves forth from the bottom. Hot hops presence brings up light peach premonitions while the non-caustic body rides the fuller-bodied feature through to the finish. A decent beer, just far from astonishing. Maybe year 11 isn’t meant to be particularly memorable. Thanks for sharing, MrFacto!
