Commercial Description:
To acknowledge this year’s anniversary, our 11th, Allagash’s brewers decided to use a champagne yeast for both the primary and secondary fermentations. This beer was brewed with both Cascade and Northern Brewer hops and copious amounts of Belgian Aromatic Malt to achieve its vibrant garnet color and unique, malty palate. At a hefty 9% ABV, the alcohol in this brew is balanced by a light sweetness, a full-bodied mouth feel and a gentle, lingering hop character. Just prior to bottling, when there is no carbonation present in the beer, a fresh dose of sugar and yeast is added. After bottling, the beer is aged in our temperature-controlled cellar, where the yeast ferments the sugar and naturally carbonates the beer. This process, known as méthode champenoise, is the same traditional process we use for all of our bottled beers. The batch of 11th Anniversary Ale was bottled in May of '06 - 950 cases, six bottles in each case and is the only batch that will be available. Its aroma is redolent of red licorice, nutmeg, wild apple, and hard candy. Its taste is malty with date and fig notes with a finish that is crisp, striking a balance between dry and fruity. We suggest serving this rustic brew at cellar temperature. Our 11th Anniversary Ale would make a perfect addition to foods such as roast duck and venison, or with desserts like pumpkin pie and apple cobbler

From a caged corked 750 ml. bottle with opening and pouring instructions on the label, sampled at a cellar temperature in a tulip glass. Poured a garnet amber with a small foamy head that settled into a thin, bubbly lacing, minimal amount of sticking. Aromas of red apples, oranges, dates, figs, clove, nutmeg and white sugar, toasted grainy, sweet malty and tiny whiffs of spicy, fusel-like alcohol. Good, steady, even carbonation and a crisp, dry, slick, creamy smooth medium bodied mouthfeel. Tastes of candied red apples, figs, grapes, a touch of orange peel, nutty clove, sweet nutmeg and white sugary, toasted grains, a very light caramel toffee, a pinch of pepper, the alcohol has a spicy sweet nature and slowly warms the palate, and a dry fruity, grain bready finish. Definitely a sipper, I have a feeling that this will only improve with age, if you like the ales from Allagash, then this is a must try.

First rating on RB to commemorate my being kicked off BA today. 750ml bottle I picked up during my last visit to Asheville. Pours into my Allagash glass a ruby/brown with copper highlights around the edges. Big alcohol, cherries, and dark fruits dominate the nose - also a touch of phenols. Flavor leads with a typical BSDA yeastiness and phenols. Midpallate develops some deep, righ fruitiness, as well as a touch of earthy, malty sweetness. Finishes with a bit of warm alcohol and a slight touch of dryness. Palate is medium thick. Overall not bad - I was expecting a bit more, but not bad by any means.

Bottle from shigadeyo, sampled with badnewsbeers. Fiery orange-brown body, thin tight buff head. Aroma of sweet grapes and apple, spice, and alcohol. Estery, earthy, bready body, dominated by spices and alcohol. Light fruits (apple and pear) are present but mostly hidden behind spicy esters. Good, but lacks complexity.

Pour is murky ruddy amber with a thin dense tan head...smell is very spicy and sweet with tons of oak, cobwebs, raisins, and cinnamon laden brown sugar...taste is sweet with brown sugar, lots of bread flavors, turning lightly spiced with pepper and nutmeg...finish is a little overly sweet and sticky, borderline cloying...awesome full luxurious mouthfeel...

Slightly hazy copper body, large head that lingers quite a while, lacing is sporadic but looks like half and half where it remains. Aroma is typical Allagash yeast with typical Allagash complexity, awesome. Red fruits and sugar dominate, intermingling with very herbal hops, Jerez brandy and fruitcake. Tastes even better than the aroma would indicate: biscuity malts, sour orange, oak and sweet brown sugar plus more of the tastes preluded by the aroma. Warming, this blend grows much more intense until at room temperature it has has a hot alcoholic burn that masks much of the nice flavor profile. Hope this improves with time as much as other big Allagash brews have. Seems to me like at the one year mark or so they all taste much nicer.

Pours a hazy brownish red. Mild head in my goblet. Aroma is pretty subdued. I’m not getting a massive aroma others are. This is a pretty laid back beer that is basically yeast, fruit, red licorice with a crispy dryish finish. ABV well hidden. Nothing special and overpriced. I paid $12 a corky. Disappointing.
