Commercial Description:
To acknowledge this year’s anniversary, our 11th, Allagash’s brewers decided to use a champagne yeast for both the primary and secondary fermentations. This beer was brewed with both Cascade and Northern Brewer hops and copious amounts of Belgian Aromatic Malt to achieve its vibrant garnet color and unique, malty palate. At a hefty 9% ABV, the alcohol in this brew is balanced by a light sweetness, a full-bodied mouth feel and a gentle, lingering hop character. Just prior to bottling, when there is no carbonation present in the beer, a fresh dose of sugar and yeast is added. After bottling, the beer is aged in our temperature-controlled cellar, where the yeast ferments the sugar and naturally carbonates the beer. This process, known as méthode champenoise, is the same traditional process we use for all of our bottled beers. The batch of 11th Anniversary Ale was bottled in May of '06 - 950 cases, six bottles in each case and is the only batch that will be available. Its aroma is redolent of red licorice, nutmeg, wild apple, and hard candy. Its taste is malty with date and fig notes with a finish that is crisp, striking a balance between dry and fruity. We suggest serving this rustic brew at cellar temperature. Our 11th Anniversary Ale would make a perfect addition to foods such as roast duck and venison, or with desserts like pumpkin pie and apple cobbler

Pours a hazy brownish red. Mild head in my goblet. Aroma is pretty subdued. I’m not getting a massive aroma others are. This is a pretty laid back beer that is basically yeast, fruit, red licorice with a crispy dryish finish. ABV well hidden. Nothing special and overpriced. I paid $12 a corky. Disappointing.

Another great brew from allagash. Nice fruity malt palate with a big oak flavor in the finish. The oak makes these beers feel so dry. Light spiciness to the yeast in the finish over a lightly hopped character. You could smell the alcohol a bit, but nothing in the taste.

Tap at Mugs Ale House. Hazy deep amber/ruby colour. Massively oaky nose with loads of vanilla, sweet toasted malt, plum/raisin and sweet brown sugar. Lightly rummy malt character. Great balance of sweet dried fruit and sweetish malts as well. A soft orangey flavour with cooling mintiness retronasally. Sweet, but not cloying. Lovely brew.

Complex aroma is sugary sweet and alluring. Notes of brown sugar, dates, apples, pears, berries, grapes, asparagus yet fairly hoppy also with some underlying caramel and chocolate notes. Opaque amber-copper coloured body is topped by a low but lasting off white head that leaves some sudsy lacing. Big caramel and toffee flavours are up front, joined by herbal hops and plenty of fruity esters. Somewhat tart in the finish. Cake like yeastiness is pervasive. Medium full body with fair to medium carbonation that leaves the body feeling rather syrupy. Going Away Party.

Bottle. Clear ruby red color with a fine, compact beige head. Pretty classic belgian aroma. Spices, light hops, toffee, caramely malts, vanilla, some oak. Some yeasty and bready notes also. Smooth, very malty flavor. Clean, light bitter notes balanced with some resiny hops. More vanilla and oak, and some dark fruit (plum, date, fig). Nice, hugely smooth. Dry finish, alcohol at the end. Silky texture, nice carbonation. Nice beer. Smooth and very earthy. One of allagash’s finer beers I would say. This one will definitely get better over time. Rerate... my numbers are going to stay the same, but this beer is much spicier, and has a much bigger finish than I remember. I can taste the alcohol for sure. A really nice BSA.

Cloudy brown, nice, dense beige head. Nice fruity aroma - grape, maybe blueberry, plus some caramel. Interesting mix of dubbel -like sweetness, plus some rich malty bready notes, all mixed in wih a muted, woodsy bitterness. Tasty stuff.

Bottle. Spicy, nutty, nutmeg, and cinnamon flavors. Cinnamon flavor lingers in the afterteast. A nice beer.

750 ml bottle. Pours to a slightly hazy, deep caramel color, with a slight white head, that fades, and a moderate carbonation. The nose on this beer is wonderful, with lots of good aromas of sweet toffee, some spicy yeast, and hints of estery/fruity sourness. The palate is slick, with good toffee and bready malt flavor, paired with some lightly sour fruity esters, and yeasty flavors. This beer finishes with more good toffee malt flavors up front, then with some yeasty flavor that lingers. Delicious, wondeful sipping brew. This beer would work well with a number of dishes, and would match a great beer to match with beef, pork, turkey, or game.
